The converted 154-foot minesweeper the GREENPEACE II (then named EDGEWATER FORTUNE) rendezvoused with the Phyllis Cormack (the first Greenpeace) off Comox racing to get to Amchitka Island before a 5.2 megaton hydrogen bomb was detonated on November 6, 1971, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. They yachts didn't get there in time but made waves, calling the attention of the world's media to what was happening. The Amchitka nuclear test program was cancelled five months later. It has been suggested that his marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
