A General Description of Sailing Yacht SHENANDOAH

This sailing yacht SHENANDOAH is a 46 metre 152 (ft) generous wooden vessel which was made at Harvey F Gamage and conceived from the design board of Robert Douglas. The spacious twin masted schooner SHENANDOAH is a particularly well designed United States made superyacht which was launched to accolade in 1964. The naval architecture office responsible for this yacht's drawings with respect to this ship was Robert Douglas. She could be considered a classic twin masted schooner.

The sailing yacht SHENANDOAH was specifically built for the passenger trade in 1964. All the materials and construction methods used were practises from the mid 19th century. The topmasts rise 94 feet above the water, there are 30 berths in 11 cabins and she has a crew of 9. SHENANDOAH’s hull is made of native Maine oak, while her decking and ceiling are pine. A little over 100,000 feet of oak went into her construction. Her lower masts are made of West Coast fir, are 20 inches in diameter, and weigh 2.5 tons apiece. She is capable of speeds of 12.5 knots, and is often seen on the horizon in Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds moving at surprising speeds without the drag of a prop.

After official launch in 1964 in South Bristol Me the boat was handed over to the happy owner having completed sea trials. A moderate proportion is manifested with a widest beam (width) of 7 m / 23 feet. With a 3.29m (10.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is deep. The material wooden was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of wood.
