Lavrion Yacht Charter, Greece

Lavrion was once a thriving ancient site for the silver mining industry and a major contributor to the political and naval power of Athens just 60 kilometres away, and now this sleepy Greek town is seeing a revival in tourism, including luxury yacht charter cruises.

At 37 kilometres from the Athens International Airport, Lavrion becomes the perfect embarkation point for a Cyclades yacht charter and as a stopover to the Sporades to the north. Transfers to various locations within the city and its periphery are made through taxis and shuttle services; to get to Lavrion from the City of Athens and the International Airport, you must take E94 Road and drive down south.

Placed at the tip of the Attiki Peninsula, Lavrion is an unusual destination with an unusual attraction that makes it a year-round destination: From ancient times through to the industrial era, the slag from the silver extraction process was dumped into the sea. Over the centuries, seawater has penetrated deep into the slag and created perfect crystals of various minerals. These wash up on the shores around Lavrion in the stormy winter seas, where crystal collectors come to claim shortly after. Those who want to visit during the warmer summer months can still sett the rare and vibrantly-coloured minerals uncovered at Lavrion outside the old mine entrances, where the rubble was offloaded.

Today, visitors have access to the ancient silver mines, smelting works, and the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion, while nearby Thorikos there is the oldest and largest ancient amphitheatre in Greece. Few tourists are aware of the culture that this coastal region has to offer, despite Lavrion being a major terminal to the surrounding islands.

This large port city has updated its facilities and Lavrion Marina along with the Olympic Marina have berths to accommodate larger superyachts. From here, visitors have clear views of the Makronisus Island, which is rich in Scuba sites covering wreck and reef dives as well as plenty of quiet coves for sunbathing and water sports as well as a memorial park and churches to visit on a hike along the trails.

5 quick reasons to visit Lavrion:

Things to Consider:

Yachting Seasons & Climate:

The summer months are the best time to visit when the temperature in July and August is an average of 29°C/84°F and rainfall is at its lowest. The water is also warmest in August, however even in the coolest month of March the sea temperature averages 15°C/59°F.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

For the summer, the temperatures rarely drop below 20°C/68° and therefore light layers with a protective covering for the winds will suffice. Take a sturdy pair of hiking boots for accessing the ruins and when visiting religious sites it is better to dress more conservatively by covering legs down to the knee and covering shoulders as well. If visiting in the winter, add a lightweight raincoat to the suitcase.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Lavrion Marina, Olympic Marina,

Karafaki Restaurant, Psaroú Restaurant, Melōdeion Bar
