This cold Arctic climate experiences a low of -10°C/14°F in the winter and a summer high of 12°C/54°F in July. The coastal capital city of Nuuk tends to receive plenty of rain/snowfall from July to September, which tends to fall in the evening with the drop in daytime and night-time temperatures. On these days guests can cruise further along the coast to clear skies or explore the city's galleries, museums and other indoor attractions.

Summer is the best time to visit for long daytime hours, with May until August experiencing more than 14 hours of sunshine for fitting in multiple activities. By contrast, winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights with crisp, clean skies.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Snow and rain are highly likely, particularly during the summer months, and guests should prepare accordingly with waterproof shoes, a warm thick coat and additional base layers, with a spare pair of warm clothes readily available for after an expedition. The summer also brings days warm enough for T-shirt weather, however guests should also carry with them a jumper (sweater) for time sent in the shade and breezy locations.

The climate-controlled galleries, museums, restaurants and other public areas mean that the group can shed multiple layers once indoors. Smart-casual clothing is the typical in this region, and the Greenland tourism board recommends sturdy footwear that gives plenty of support to the ankles and excellent traction to serve for all activities including sailing and hiking.

There is little shade in Greenland and when there is 24-hour sunshine, sun exposure is high, so have sunscreen at the ready along with a pair of sun glasses and a hat with a broad brim. The summer months are also when gnats and mosquitoes are at their most prolific. This isn't so much a problem when out at sea or along the shores, where coastal breezes keep them away, however it's useful to carry some bug spray for in-land activities such as skiing and dog sledding.
