Greenland Yacht Charter
A Greenland luxury yacht charter is an unforgettable experience at any time of the year for wildlife lovers and adventurers - the dramatic landscapes and seascapes change throughout the year, so a trip in summer will differ greatly from one during the long winter months.
From May, kayak among glaciers as the Midnight Sun shines overhead and and Northern Lights, hiking and biking trails open up, and crystal clear lakes are revealed from below disappearing ice. Take part in food festivals among the colourful villages, or party at the bars, clubs and beaches to celebrate a special occasion in style.
For your ultimate adventure, there are sailing yachts and motor yachts with ice hulls ready to take you on a safe and comfortable cruise through one of the world's least populated regions. Witness the migration of whales and sea birds, the melting winter ice creating waterfalls and colour returning to the hills and mountains in the south. Greenland Yacht Charter Experiences
A luxury yacht charter in the Arctic comes with plenty of entertainment on board, whether its a large selection of films, a well-equipped gym or a comprehensive spa with steam room, sauna and massage services. When you aren't being pampered the everyday comforts include well-proportioned plush cabins and the possibility of full-height windows and/or cosy fireplaces in the warm salons to take in the magnificent views. Those who want to embrace nature can soak in the sundeck Jacuzzi as you cruise past crystal blue glaciers, and rest on the sunbeds in the sunshine on a warm summer's day.
At Nuuk or Qaqortoq, the group can head ashore to see the colourful houses up close and taste authentic Greenlandic cuisine. The summer months is when everyone comes alive and gets outside for hiking and biking along the coastal trails. Arctic foxes, polar bears and whales are just some of the species to capture on camera during your trip.
Qaqortukulooq (or 'Whale Island') has some of the most intact Norse ruins in the Arctic, before heading north to the stunning Ilulissat Ice Fjord UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the world's most active glacier. Nearby, Uunartoq has hot springs for natural warm water bathing surrounded by snowy mountains.
Things to Consider:
Yachting Seasons & Climate:
This cold Arctic climate experiences a low of -10°C/14°F in the winter and a summer high of 12°C/54°F in July. The coastal capital city of Nuuk tends to receive plenty of rain/snowfall from July to September, which tends to fall in the evening with the drop in daytime and night-time temperatures. On these days guests can cruise further along the coast to clear skies or explore the city's galleries, museums and other indoor attractions.
Summer is the best time to visit for long daytime hours, with May until August experiencing more than 14 hours of sunshine for fitting in multiple activities. By contrast, winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights with crisp, clean skies.
Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:
Snow and rain are highly likely, particularly during the summer months, and guests should prepare accordingly with waterproof shoes, a warm thick coat and additional base layers, with a spare pair of warm clothes readily available for after an expedition. The summer also brings days warm enough for T-shirt weather, however guests should also carry with them a jumper (sweater) for time sent in the shade and breezy locations.
The climate-controlled galleries, museums, restaurants and other public areas mean that the group can shed multiple layers once indoors. Smart-casual clothing is the typical in this region, and the Greenland tourism board recommends sturdy footwear that gives plenty of support to the ankles and excellent traction to serve for all activities including sailing and hiking.
There is little shade in Greenland and when there is 24-hour sunshine, sun exposure is high, so have sunscreen at the ready along with a pair of sun glasses and a hat with a broad brim. The summer months are also when gnats and mosquitoes are at their most prolific. This isn't so much a problem when out at sea or along the shores, where coastal breezes keep them away, however it's useful to carry some bug spray for in-land activities such as skiing and dog sledding.
Main Ports and Marinas:
Nuuk Port, Port of Qaqortoq, Port of Ilulissat Famous Restaurants & Clubs: Sarfalik Restaurant (Nuuk), Charoen Porn Restaurant (Nuuk), Kristinemut Bar (Nuuk), Skyline Bar (Nuuk), Cafe Iluliaq (Ilulissat) Arctic Cafe (Qaqortoq)
A Must See Attraction:
Nuuk, Qaqortukulooq, Disko Bay, Ilulissat Ice Fjord, Uunartoq hot springs
Best beaches to visit in your yacht:
Disko Bay Beach, Rocky Beach, Banana Coast
Best time to go:
Greenland is a year-round destination, and the best time to go depends on what you want to see and experience: The snows in winter are great for skiing and dog sledding under the Northern Lights, while summer is the time to go kayaking among the glaciers and experience the Midnight Sun.
