7 Wonderful Days Exploring the Turquoise Coast of Turkey by Superyacht
There’s nothing quite like a seven-day journey along the stunning Turquoise Coast of Turkey. What could be better than sailing from magical Istanbul to the spectacular underwater ruins of Kekova?
Not many countries in the world have such diversity as Turkey. The major cities are grounded in the modern world. Turkey’s history and architecture have been influenced by the Ottoman, Byzantine, Roman and Persian empires.
The southwest of the country, known as the Turquoise Coast, shows signs of recent tourist development but each individual town and island still retain their own magic. While chartering a yacht in Turkey there are many must-see places. From ancient ruins to spectacular beaches, rustic cafes and restaurants to quiet anchorages, Turkey has it all.
When it comes to culinary delights, few cuisines rival Turkey. The neighbouring Greeks will probably disagree over the origins of their table fare which typically features lamb, seafood, yoghurts and olives.
Turkey’s largest city Istanbul is a melting pot of culture. Why not plan to spend a few days here before or after your cruise vacation? Few visitors leave the city without buying a rug or Turkish Kilim from one of the many exciting bazaars.
Day 1 - Istanbul to Marmaris
You’re more than likely to begin your superyacht charter vacation in Istanbul. From there it’s only a short flight to Dalaman International Airport which serves southwest Turkey. It’s then on to Marmaris to board your yacht. Marmaris is one of Turkey’s most popular resorts along the Turkish Riviera. The charming marina waterfront features a long stretch of outdoor restaurants and cafes, ideal for people watching. The town’s majestic castle and old town are always worth a visit.
Day 2 - Marmaris to Ekincik
From lively Marmaris you’ll soon enter the laid back and serenity of Ekincik. Ekincik is a beautiful, nature conservation area. During your time here take a short taxi ride from the town’s small waterfront to the Sultaniye Spa’s thermal baths, heaven. After relaxing and recharging your batteries, the friendly crew can take you by tender to Caunos on the Dalyan River. It’s the perfect spot to admire the ancient ruins and rupestrian tombs.
Day 3 - Ekincik to Fethiye
When on route to Fethiye, set some time aside for a swim and lunch on Tersane Island. A visit to Manastir and Cleopatra Bay is also a must. Fethiye, a picturesque coastal town in the southwest of Turkey, sits atop Telmessos, the ancient capital of the Lycian coast. There are numerous historical sites to explore as well as many Lycian tombs and saracophagi. During your stay here, don’t miss the fish market in the old city. Your professional on board chef will be more than happy to prepare a mouth-watering seafood meal.
Day 4 - Fethiye to Gocek
Once only a small fishing port, Gocek has many hotels, shops and restaurants. Just like Marmaris, Gocek is also a yachting centre so expect to see many other different types of yacht in port. A group of five islands called the Yassica Adalari provide perfect scenic anchorages for a quiet, peaceful overnight stay.
Day 5 - Yassica Adalari to Kalkan
Kalkan is a charming village up on a hillside rich in flowers and restaurants. The townspeople have taken special care to preserve Kalkan’s Ottoman and Greek architecture. This has resulted in the Old Town and new developments living in harmony, better than some other coastal areas. Enjoy an overnight stay in the new Kas Marina, around 12 miles away.
Day 6 - Kas to Kekova
After taking in the quaint shops and streets of the picturesque fishing village of Kas or the theatre ruins just outside town, it’s time to board a local boat for Kastellorizo. A half day trip will give you plenty of time to visit this splendid Greek village offshore. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely cruise to Kekova.
Day 7 - Kekova
Visiting Kekova is amazing. Using local boats, don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore the underwater ruins of this ancient city. Have your camera ready to take snapshots of the tombs emerging from the sea. After having such a great time, spend the rest of your day ashore in a colourful Turkish restaurant. Relax, sitting on Turkish carpets sipping Turkish coffee.
