The 11th Southern Wind Shipyard Trophy, a race taking place every two years, is due to start in just three days. It is raced within the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, organised by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda of Porto Cervo and Boat International Media.

Five days of challenging coastal races in the spectacular setting of the La Maddalena Archipelago in Sardinia, Italy followed by five nights of carefree social events. The eleventh biannual SWS Trophy, raced within the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta organised by the YCCS and Boat International Media, will take place from June 4th to 9th in Porto Cervo, Italy.
The Southern Wind Shipyard Trophy, a regatta and rendezvous dedicated specifically to yachts built by Southern Wind Shipyard, was first held in 1998 in Capri and was hosted by La Settimana dei Tre Golfi. In 2007 it moved to Porto Cervo for the regatta held to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the YCCS, remaining there for its following editions. The LPSR opens the Mediterranean superyacht calendar and attracts an ever-increasing fleet of the world’s most beautiful and competitive sailing yachts. In SWS Trophy years Southern Wind Shipyard yachts count for about 30% of the participants in this prestigious regatta.
Sailing yacht Thalima
This year six Southern Wind yachts will be competing for the Trophy. Eyes will be on the SW 94 sailing yacht KibokoDos, a fast racer/cruiser designed by Reichel/Pugh with Nauta Yacht Design. This yacht is making her debut on the international regatta scene with a top-level crew that represents seven nations ranging from South Africa to Spain. To cite only a few: the South African Jan Dekker, bowsman on Alinghi during the 32nd America’s Cup and also aboard ABN Amro One on their victorious Volvo Ocean Race in 2006; the Italian trimmer Lorenzo Mazza, another America’s Cup veteran who has raced aboard Azzurra, Luna Rossa and Alinghi; the Spaniard Adam Ostenfeld, famous both for his vast experience acquired in five different editions of the America’s Cup and for his proverbial joviality, will be team manager. Last but not least Juan Ignacio Entrecanales, KibokoDos’ owner, will also be her helmsman.
The SWS Trophy attracts a faithful group of yachts and their owners. A returning racer will be the SW 100 DS sailing yacht I-Sea, back for her third edition of this event; she too will have her owner at the helm. She will be in close competition with yachts L’Ondine, charter yacht Mrs Seven and Cape Arrow, all part of the popular SW 100 semi-custom series. SWS yachts racing in this event will have the benefit of a dedicated final classification: the three top placing SWS yachts in the final General Overall Result will win SWS Trophy awards on top of any LPSR regatta awards they also qualify to win. Everybody is also looking forward to welcoming sailing yacht Thalima SW 110, the current flagship, which is trying to reach the fleet straight from the Caribbean.
Racing is only part of the action. On Tuesday June 5th, Southern Wind owners and their crews will meet at Poltu Quatu, a beautiful natural fjord, for the exclusive SWS owners and crew dinner. The dinner, held at the Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu, will open with a welcome cocktail kindly offered by Pantaenius Yacht insurance and is an excellent opportunity for owners to get to know each other and to recount their experiences after the first day of racing.
