In an already high profile and packed sporting year for England, 2012 is also the year that the Royal Southern Yacht Club proudly achieves its 175th Anniversary year. The Club is therefore especially pleased to be presenting a comprehensive and exciting Racing Programme that includes a number of high profile National Championships and some ‘signature’ events to refresh the Anniversary, of which more details will be introduced at the beginning of the New Year.
The ever-popular Summer Series Regattas are back in a format that allows for maximum racing on the water with minimal impact on other events taking place. In May, June, July and September, an entire weekend is dedicated to IRC, Sportsboat, One-design and White Sail/Club Class racing. Any class that can muster more than eight yachts will be given their own class start.
In addition, the Southern is very pleased to have been selected to manage National Championships for the J/80s, J/97s and J/109s. The Club will welcome back Jim Saltonstall for a Training Day, run Royal Southern Academy Match Cup Events, the X Yachts Solent Cup, J/111 Regatta, Foxers Regatta, the British 12Metre Open Championships, SB3 Racing; IRC Solent Series 2, SORC 175, Mini Tonner, SIRCON, X Boat, Quarter Tonner and Southern Six Racing, the J/109 Saturday Series, Hunter 707 Southern Championship, Women’s Open Keelboat Championships, and a Farr 45 Race Weekend.
A terrific event that is enjoyed both on and off the water is the J Cup. It returns to the Southern in 2012 and will also include the J/109 and J/97 UK National Championships.
The recently announced Biscay 2012 Offshore Race will start on the 16th September 2012. Inaugurated by the Royal Southern Yacht Club in celebration of its 175th Anniversary, the Biscay 2012 is a new open sailing race for monohull vessels and has as its Ambassador, yachtswoman Samantha Davies. A single race, run in three successive Legs, with points accrued towards an overall classification, Biscay 2012 covers approximately 950 nautical miles, starting and finishing in the Solent and visiting the French ports of La Rochelle and Brest.
The Royal Southern Yacht Club always scores highly with its members on its ability to lay on a really great social function and two dates for your 2012 diaries include the infamous Crew Balls on Saturday 26th May and Saturday 8th September, a perfect opportunity for crews to feast well and let their hair down!
