The HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show is moving to the center of the city. At the moment in build, the Amsterdam Marina, situated at the previous NDSM yard will become the boat show’s new venue. From Tuesday 4 to Sunday 9 September, the new location on the northern banks of the IJ waterway will boast the best of Dutch as well as international yachtbuilding. From 1 October, the marina will be in use by fixed berth-holders.
Amsterdam Marina under construction
Although famed as a world city on the water, Amsterdam has long missed a central marina with cosmopolitan allure. All this is about to change with the delivery of the Amsterdam Marina, a modern and fully equipped location with 350 berths nestled around a pier in the IJ waterway. The construction of the marina is well underway and will be ready in time for the start of the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show, providing space to all the yachts exhibited.
The preparations for the future HISWA head office have also started, with delivery scheduled for the summer of 2013. The building will be situated at the head of the pier in the so-called HISWA Nautical Centre Amsterdam, which will also accommodate marina facilities and a restaurant surrounded by terraces and berths. Around the marina will be space for various nautical companies and apartments, transforming the NDSM yard into the nautical hotspot of Amsterdam in the years ahead.
Nautical history
The NDSM yard has a rich nautical heritage. It used to be the place where large seagoing vessels were built, such as the Oranje, as well as super tankers that were launched in two halves and welded together in the water. With a direct ferry connection to Amsterdam Central Station, NDSM is a unique location that has already been discovered by a wide range of top creative companies such as IDTV, MTV, Hema, VNU and Red Bull.
Amsterdam Marina is situated on the widest part of the IJ waterway at a crossroads of the North Sea Canal, Markermeer lake, Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, North-Holland Canal and the mast-up route (Staande Mastroute). It is an excellent starting point for sailing the North Sea, the IJsselmeer lake, the many other nearby waters and, of course, Amsterdam’s famous canals.
Sister marinas
Amsterdam Marina is part of the De Jachthaven Group, with Regatta Centre Medemblik, Marina Stellendam and Marina Schokkerstrand as sister marinas. Within the group, all berth owners have the right to moor at one of the other ports free of charge. A day, a month or a year, it allows fixed berth-holders to vary their sailing area. After the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show 2012, the marina will be open to berth owners and visitors starting 1 October 2012; initially with temporary facilities on the quay until the completion of the Yacht Club and new harbour office, which will include modern and comfortable sanitary facilities including two bathrooms with baths and views over the IJ waterway.
