Built by the Brooklin Boat Yard, designed by Bruce Johnson and the yard’s in-house team, with naval architecture also by Bruce Johnson, the 27,84-metre (91ft) custom luxury sailing yacht SONNY III (Project 91) has just returned from her successful sea trials. She is the new flagship of the American company and is being constructed for an experienced owner and repeat customer to the yard with cold-moulded, laminated wood hull.
One of the main features of this fantastic high-performance cruising yacht is the fact that she was built with more accessibility in mind, as per her Owner’s request. She is equipped with chair lifts at each companionway, a power reclining chair in the master cabin, side boarding ladder and a transom-boarding platform.
Her classically styled exterior lines feature a flush deck, a dynamically raked bow and a reverse transom combined with teak decking and varnished teak toe rail. SONNY III’s twin cockpit layout provides safety for guests while all sail handling is in the aft working cockpit. Low, varnished-teak cockpit coamings and canvas dodgers protect each companionway opening.
SONNY III boasts a double headsail rig controlled by hydraulic furlers by Harken. The non-overlapping headsail configuration with chainplates pushed outboard greatly reduces loads and allows for a smaller mast section, winches and hardware. The mainsail has hydraulic in-boom furling. The carbon mast is from Offshore Spars with 3Di sails by North Sails.
The interior general arrangements incorporate a crew cabin which is located forward and boats a private head and stall shower. Furthermore, there are two guest cabins located forward of the mast, one of which has an ensuite head and stall shower, while the other has a day head and a separate shower.
The main saloon is a great area to relax and unwind, featuring an elliptical dining area, two recliners and a navigation station.
The master suite spreads the entire width of the yacht and can be accessed either via the Portside passageway or through the large galley which is situated to starboard. The owner suite has an ensuite head with stall shower, Herreshoff-style interiors with white and cream paintwork combined with American cherry joinery, leather, teak and maple cabins sole.
