A young and talented UK designer Chris Bowen presents its new 55m motor yacht Solar Privacy System (SPS). Solar power is not unknown to super yacht design, but Solar Privacy System superyacht´s concept represents more than just a renewable source of energy. Her solar panels offer not only increased sustainability, but also a dynamic privacy screen, thus resulting in a dual function design feature.
This opens up new approaches to designing the profile, allowing the deck or shoulder line to be placed higher, giving a more simple and elegant profile. The sweeping shoulder line appears to soften the superstructure, while minimal sacrifice is made to exterior views in the lower levels.
This is made possible as each solar panel is able to rotate 360 degrees and pivot from its base point at any angle between 0 and 110 degrees, thus improving the efficiency of the solar panels. Bowen super yacht SPS in an upright position forms a screen, providing a customisable level of privacy to the aft deck and main salon from both port and starboard sides.
In order to increase interior viewing angles in the forward section of the main deck. A long sweeping window runs the length of the master suite, offering panoramic views on either side.
The windows are set back from the side of the hull to allow staff to access the forward sections, but also by doing this it creates a negative space between the two sections that form the hull.
This is achieved by the windows running the entire length of the forward section constituting the illusion of suspension to the upper section. By breaking the hull up into these two parts, there is no definitive deck line running the length of yacht, creating a more complexed and dynamic form.
The area forward of the master suite is the owners private terrace. This offers a unique vantage point to admire the surrounds and an opportunity for the owner to enjoy an outdoor breakfast from the comfort of his own suite.
The 55m luxury yacht SPS can be controlled remotely by mobile phone or tablet computer, allowing owners and guests full customisation of the system to suit their situation. Although the captain would take charge of positioning the SPS yacht for energy generation, owners and guests can choose the privacy settings, choosing from various interchangeable settings. As each panel can move independently, they could choose to lower the forward half to allow sight lines and natural light into the main salon, but opt to shelter the pool area to create either more privacy or act as a wind break when at anchor.
Using GPS in the remote devices, the panels could be arranged in a configuration that creates an uninterrupted view from a particular point, while restricting viewing angles from the outside. This works much in the same way blinds when angled up let light in from above, but prohibit a viewing angle at ground level. This feature would be most useful when owners and guests are situated in one place, dinning table, bar, pool etc.
