Developed by the Australian design firm, using a specialised design approach, the all-new 60m support vessel concept by Bury Design offers unparalleled levels of performance in the support of small submarines for extended deep ocean operations. Working in partnership with the submersible manufacturer, the 60m Bury yacht concept is specifically created to meet the requirements of the range of Triton personal submarines. This vessel concept is also ideal for a more general expedition yacht use.
Paul Bury’s experience in superyacht design and marine oil and gas applications has enabled the development of a unique vessel combining very high efficiency, comfort and serviceability. The 60m Bury expedition yacht concept effectively marries the efficiency, space and stability of a catamaran with the ride comfort of a monohull.
The hull form is a high efficiency stabilised mono-hull, providing outstanding powering efficiency and excellent ride and passenger comfort. It consists of a long, narrow and deep centre hull containing all propulsive machinery. The outer hulls are shorter, shallower and of much less volume. The dimensions of the outer hulls are tailored to provide initial stability and rate of roll, and are optimised for minimal resistance. This hull arrangement allows the 60m Bury yacht concept to be configured and optimised for either high efficiency moderate speed operation or very high maximum speeds. The trimaran configuration is ideal for implementation of a dynamic positioning system, vital for deep-sea submarine operations.
The 60m Bury motor yacht concept’s layout provides a very large working deck area aft with a highly configurable forward accommodation area. The aft deck is configured to support submarine activities, including below decks stowage and dedicated workshop facilities of up to four manned submersibles. The subs are suitable for high-end personal or tourist excursions, including the Triton 36000/3, capable of full ocean depth (FOD) dives to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
The A-frame launching system, tailored for heavier submarines, provides a secure and effective launch and recovery system (LARS), minimising possible damage to the submarine. The significant weight of these submarines (Triton 36000/3 weighs 9000kg!) required the lifting devices onboard to be carefully designed and engineered. A retracting hydraulic crane, allowing the easy handling of tenders, other submarines or accommodation modules, services the large aft deck. Experience in the commercial marine field is invaluable for this type of practical, mission critical engineering.
The low levels of yacht motion, both underway and at rest, coupled with the dynamic positioning system make this a good platform for helicopter operations. Shown in this configuration is a landing platform forward with a hangar under. The aft and upper decks could also be configured for helo operations.
Forward are crew and guest amenities, comparable to any superyacht of similar size. As configured the vessel has accommodation for 12 crew, 6 guests plus a full suite and private deck for the owner. The mission configurable area provides flexibility for the client to incorporate more VIP accommodation or other purposes such as laboratories or film editing studios.
In general the 60m Bury yacht concept is completely tailorable to mission requirements allowing the client to determine the level of ride comfort and speed independently of the vessel load capacity.
Propulsion options include conventional diesel on shaft or diesel-electric systems, both driving twin controllable pitch propellers. Construction is from aluminium alloy, however for moderate speed applications, steel could be used in the main hull shell and supporting structure.
