Held from 4 to 9 September 2012 in the new Amsterdam Marina at the NDSM yard in Amsterdam city centre, the 2012 HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show will be given an honour to berth the 76m three-masted charter yacht Stad Amsterdam (City of Amsterdam), the famous replica of the merchant vessel De Amsterdam from 1854. The tall ship, Stad Amsterdam superyacht, also known from the Dutch television series The Beagle, will be open to the public during the boat show on Friday afternoon as well as during the weekend.

Classic versus modern
The Oranjewerf shipyard in Amsterdam took the first steps in the construction of the steel hull of the clipper Stad Amsterdam in December 1997. Led by the renowned naval architect and former ocean racer Gerard Dijkstra, the project set out to create a vessel “focused on optimal performance below water, and a feast for the eyes and the sailor’s heart above.” The hull was finished in December 1998 and moved to the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam for its outfitting, completed in 2000.

The stunning wheelhouse, three enormous masts, the ropes on deck, the beautifully maintained mahogany details, the crew that raises and strikes the sails in accordance with nineteenth-century customs; everything reflects the ambiance of shipping in a very different era. Today, Stad Amsterdam remains an historic flagship for Dutch maritime tradition.

In contrast, the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show will also be exhibiting the most recent and modern yacht designs by Gerard Dijkstra, such as the Bestevaer 56ST by K&M Yachtbuilders. In doing so, this leading exhibition will showcase the past, present and future of Dutch nautical craftsmanship in all its splendour.

Beagle
Many visitors will recognise the clipper from the well-known Dutch television series ‘The Beagle’ produced by the VPRO network. On 1 September 2009 the Stad Amsterdam departed for a world tour in the footsteps of Darwin to mark the 200th birthday of the biologist, nature scientist and geologist. Nowadays, the clipper is used as a training vessel and a passenger ship for guests sailing the world’s oceans, as well as being a regular participant in Tall Ships Races. In 2005 and 2010 she led the line as the flagship for the SAIL Amsterdam event.

HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show 2012
This year’s HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show from Tuesday 4 to Sunday 9 September will be the first to take place in the new Amsterdam Marina at the NDSM yard in the centre of Amsterdam. The exhibition will be open daily from 11.00 to 19.00. The main sponsor is Delta Lloyd, with Insinger de Beaufort and I Amsterdam as partners and Gaastra and Opel as official suppliers of the event.
