Northern Marine signs a contract to build a 85-foot expedition yacht Blood Baron scheduled for launch in the summer of 2013. The hull number 8501 superyacht Blood Baron is a completely new 85 design by Northern Marine created in collaboration with Adriel Design and her captain Aaron Pufal.
Blood Baron yacht NM 85 LRC will feature accommodation for eight guests in four guest cabins, in addition she will have one crew cabin and one captain’s cabin. The vessel features a stunning contemporary design with a blood red hull.
Andy McDonald, President of Northern Marine says about the new 85′ motor yacht Blood Baron: “It’s the same rugged hull and quality craftsmanship that a Northern Marine is known for, but with a contemporary styling that could open up a whole new marketplace for our long range cruisers.”
The 85 design represents a collaboration between Northern Marine, Adriel Design, and the yacht’s captain, Aaron Pufal, who describes Blood Baron yacht on his blog as “an updated take on an expedition yacht.” With an extended superstructure that brings the pilothouse aft to create a large panoramic skylounge, the 85 will feature a voluminous interior similar to that of a motoryacht with plenty of space for entertaining and relaxation, but with the range and fuel efficiency of a long-range cruiser.
“I think a lot of people who follow Northern Marine will be surprised by the styling of our new 85,” says Andy McDonald, president of Northern Marine. “We were excited to work with a customer who was interested in doing something different. It’s the same rugged hull and quality of craftsmanship that Northern Marine is known for, but with a contemporary styling that could open up a whole new marketplace for our long range cruisers.”
Custom-designed Spacious Interiors for Relaxing and Entertaining Accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom on the main deck; a VIP stateroom with a king-size walkaround, two queen guest staterooms, and a crew cabin on the lower deck; and a captain’s stateroom behind the wheelhouse that is designed to alternatively serve as an owner’s cabin. The scenic skylounge on the bridge deck will include a bar and home entertainment center, flanked by a huge glass aft wall, with sliding glass doors opening to the aft deck for alfresco dining.
The flybridge is equally spacious, with room for a 17-foot tender, a couple of jet skies or motorcycles, as well as a bar area, a corner settee and table, and chaise lounges with sweeping views. The main deck of the new super yacht Blood Baron features a “country kitchen” style galley and dining area with all refrigeration and storage under the counters to create an airy, open “great room” feel for mealtime gatherings, with a roomy saloon aft.
Build Practices and “True” Customization Exceeded Expectations
When the owner of the new 85 Blood Baron yacht decided he wanted a larger boat that could circumnavigate the globe, he charged his captain, Pufal, to lead the search for an expedition vessel that could provide the range without a large crew. Pufal says the search process was like a jigsaw puzzle that ultimately pointed to Northern Marine. One of the deciding factors for selecting Northern Marine was their willingness to incorporate the engineering and styling features that were important to the build.
“There’s a lot of false advertising out there,” Pufal explains. “Many boat builders say their boats are fully customizable, but ask them to change a window or extend the superstructure and you’ll find out quickly it’s all propaganda.”
Pufal also says he was impressed with Northern Marine’s standard build practices. “From simple things like the fuel-sight gauges, to the construction of the superstructure and the stuff you don’t see, their standard build practices exceeded anything I’ve worked with. It’s things that production boats just don’t do,” he explains.
Built in the USA a Key Factor Another deciding factor leading to the selection of Northern Marine to build the Red Baron, according to Pufal, was the tangible connection between the builder and the boat.
“I met with a lot of sales managers and brokers in very fancy offices who ultimately have their boats built overseas,” Pufal says. “What I like about Northern Marine is that they are not just a marketer. They actually build the boats they sell, and they’re ultimately a better buy compared to what you pay for boats built overseas.”
According to McDonald, perhaps the final clincher in the deal was a Pacific Northwest boating trip the owner took earlier this year with his children on board. At the end of the trip his family didn’t want to leave the boat, McDonald explains, and any doubts he had about building a bigger boat vanished.
“That’s another great thing about building with Northern Marine,” Pufal says in agreement. “You’re getting the boat built in the Pacific Northwest. When
the boat is ready and delivered, you’re in one of the best places in the world to spend a few months on a shakedown cruise.”
