About Bilgin Yachts
Bilgin Yacht is a Turkish shipyard specialising in motorboats spanning from 25 to 45 metres in length, with highly customised interiors and exteriors, taking about 14 to 18 months to the completion of a yacht.
The yard was founded by Bilgin Sengun as a family business in the 1950s. Until the 1990s the yard continued with custom built motor sailers and sailing yachts. Today the yard is run by his son Ismail and nephew Mehmet and the shipyards Sales & Relation Manager Yildirim Bilgen who joined the Bilgin Shipyard in 2005.
Bilgin Yacht started building the new generation super & mega yachts in Cold Moulded construction technology. In early 2010 the 50m steel hull for the classic motorsailer/schooner has been started. Her superstructure will be constructed in Cold Moulded Technology, as well.
The new sales and relation management has been taking on pure custom projects over 30 metres up to 45metres LOA for export products. The company currently employs some 150 staff, including 50 carpenters and a team of architects, designers and engineers.
Bilgin Yard works with well-known European designers such as the Italian Hot Lab Yacht Design studio and the British company H2 Yacht Design. Germany’s Joachim Kinder has designed one of the latest builds, the 38 metre motor yacht Indiana and the 45 metre motor yacht Tatiana. Other that working with external designers, Bilgin Yachts has also their own team of designers.
Bilgin manufactures furniture, fittings and other accessories for the interiors in-house, while suppliers provide other parts such as glass, electrical equipment, navigation systems, deck hardware, engines and so on. Subcontractors are also brought in to carry out painting jobs.
The current shipyard covers around 7,000 square metres and can accommodate five to six projects simultaneously depending on sizes. Bilgin Yacht’s biggest motor yacht so far is the 45 metre motor yacht Tatiana scheduled to be launched in early 2011, however the yard has ambitions to start building projects above that threshold. This would imply using steel and aluminium as the main material of the boat, while so far the yard has only worked with wood (using mainly West System epoxies with cold-moulded mahogany).
With the new target in mind, Bilgin Yacht has already put together a team in preparation for its eventual entry into the larger yacht market. Its current facility is located in Kuçukçekmece (Istanbul) by the Sea of Marmara, very close to the city’s main airport. There are plans to invest in a bigger shipyard and currently the company is searching for a suitable location to satisfy its new ambition.
