Amsterdam RAI has unveiled the exciting and detailed program of the upcoming Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction. Held every other year during the annual Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS), this year’s symposium is being organized by the HISWA Holland Marine industry, and will take place on November 17 and 18. The length of the event has been extended due to the exceptional content of the presentations, making the symposium a must-attend event for yacht builders, engineers, designers, naval architects, as well as R&D personnel.
The program of the Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction will cater for a wide range of disciplines as speakers highlight the very latest findings on this highly specialized field. Professor Hans Hopman, head of the Ship Design, Production and Operations section at Delft University of Technology and chairman of the symposium, explains why the program covers such a wide range of disciplines. “We are focusing on the areas which are keeping today’s yacht designers, builders and scientists busy. Moreover, we extend this emphasis across the motor and sailing superyacht sectors, ensuring that developments in smaller yachts also receive the attention they deserve.”
Program
The following presentations and speakers have already been confirmed for the two-day Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction, for which registration is now open.
• Will increasing regulations affect the demand for superyachts? (C. van Hooren, SYBAss)
• Dynamic positioning capabilities for superyachts (J. Calver, J. Roy, BMT Nigel Gee)
• Design optimisation for small craft (A. Abma, Vripack)
• Parameters affecting the performance of the C-class wing sail (S.R. Turnock, I.M. Campbell, M. Magherini, University of Southampton)
• Dynamic measurement of pressures, sailshape and forces on a full scale spinnaker (J. Deparday, P. Bot, F. Hauville, Naval Academy Research Institute, France, D. Motta, D. J. Le Pelley, Yacht Research Unit, University of Auckland)
• Can a flapless hydrofoil provide a realistic alternative to a standard moth foil with a flap? (J.R. Mackenzie, Australian Maritime College)
• The interaction between sailing yachts in fleet and match racing situations (P.J Richards, N. Aubin and D.J. Le Pelley, Yacht Research Unit, University of Auckland)
• Comparison of downwind sailing performance predicted from wind tunnel tests with fullscale trials from America’s Cup Class Yachts (I.M. Campbell, Wolfson Unit MTIA)
• Experimental and numerical assessment of superyacht aerodynamic performances and characteristics (F. Fossati, P. Schito, F. Robustelli, Politecnico di Milano)
• Advanced propulsion trains for superyachts (B. Vollmer, F. Hoppe, Renk, S. Brealey, J. Roy, BMT Nigel Gee)
• Solving vibrational resonance on a large yacht using a Tuned Mass Demper (A.W. Vredeveldt, TNO)
• Glass as a load bearing material in yacht structures (K.M. Jansen, Feadship)
• Adhesion: lessons learned about adhesive bonding in ship structures (K. Custers, Damen Shipyards)
• Merits of flapping roll stabilizer fins (R. Dallinga, S. Rapuc, MARIN)
• A quantitative study on relative motions during tender boarding (P. van Loon, Feadship)
HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction
The HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction has a rich history of exploring such topics and this year will be the 23rd edition. It is an initiative of the HISWA Holland Marine Industry, Delft University of Technology and Amsterdam RAI, with support from MARIN, Damen Shipyards, Royal Huisman Shipyard and Feadship.
METS
METS is the world’s largest trade exhibition of equipment, materials and systems for the international marine leisure industry. It is organized by Amsterdam RAI in association with ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations). For the first time this year the event will open its doors at 9.00 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The show’s target groups are yacht builders, naval architects, repair yards, distributors, dealers, wholesalers, captains, marina operators and equipment manufacturers from around the world. Three dedicated specialist pavilions are part of METS: the SuperYacht Pavilion, the Marina & Yard Pavilion and the Construction Material Pavilion.
