The inaugural YA ! 2014, associating Yachting with Art, started in style, in a ceremony attended by His Excellency Mr Michel Roger, Minister of State, His Excellency Mr Antonio Morabito, the Italian Ambassador to Monaco, as well as plenty of key Italian figures. Until Sunday, October 5, exhibitions are on display along Quai Louis II, aboard yachts in the YCM Marina and in the Yacht Club de Monaco’s lounges.
A first edition, it has been organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco as part of the Principality’s 3rd edition of Il Mese della Cultura e della Lingua Italiana, promoting Italian culture and language, in collaboration with the Italian Ambassador to discover/rediscover the richness of this country’s culture.
Exhibition – L’Art de Vivre la Mer à bord (private, invitation only): Owners open their decks to artists…(1st to 5th October, YCM Marina)
Eleven superyachts over 25m in length will be welcoming collectors, owners and Yacht Club de Monaco members to see exhibitions of works by modern artists (for example paintings by Alighiero Boetti and sculptures by Fausto Melotti) and contemporary artists such as sculptor Giorgio Vigna, Italian painter Mimmo Paladino, French painter Ghass, the American Laurel Holloman and Katharina Fritsch. This German visual artist is author of an internationally famous work where the world of popular legends from the past are intertwined with images from childhood in a modern quest to create maximum visual impact. “Many of my sculptures,” she says, “exist as an immaterial image which suddenly emerges in my mind. It’s like a vision. I think in images.”
People strolling along Quai Louis II will discover monumental sculptures by Gianfranco Meggiato and Xhixha Helidon.
Exhibition – Mediterraneo: Public to meet Italian artists…(2nd to 23rd October, free entry)
Eager to share and discuss with as many people as possible, the Mediterraneo, i volti della metafora exhibition, which brings together some 20 artists from Italy, will be open daily from 10.00am to 7.00pm in the YCM’s Meeting Room, on Quai Louis II, open to the public.
Light installation – SE(E)A: Sound and light show to illuminate the harbour (4th October – 10.00pm)
Another highlight of YA ! 2014 is a light installation on Saturday 4th October from 10.00pm put on by Marco Nereo Rotelli, a gala dinner having been organised starting at 8.00pm in the Ballroom (by reservation only).
Staged in collaboration with Artcurial, based on music by Italian jazz trumpeter Paolo Fresu and featuring two star dancers from La Scala in Milan, this original 40-minute performance entitled SE(E)A will light up the Yacht Club de Monaco and YCM Marina. A fine tribute to the sea, which is a source of inspiration for all these artists.
Exhibitions – Il Mito e la Musa, Venezia, Con_temporary and I linguaggi del Mare (private, by invitation only): Art invited into the new building (2nd to 23rd October)
Taking full advantage of its new building designed by Lord Foster, with its contemporary architecture, elegant lines and where furnishings blend into the space in a naturally casual way, the Yacht Club de Monaco is hosting a number of exhibitions in the various spaces.
