Following the successful collaboration between Doyle Sails in New Zealand and Royal Huisman on the 2014-delivered 46-metre superyacht ELFJE, Doyle is now thrilled to announce that they are once again teaming up with the prestigious Dutch shipyard, this time on the new 56-metre Dykstra-designed sailing yacht AQUARIUS. Luxury superyacht AQUARIUS will boast a full wardrobe of Doyle Stratis sails.
Doyle Sails New Zealand has been working with the yard and naval architects to help them adjust the luxury yacht AQUARIUS’ initial sail specs to deliver the best results for the owners from their sail plan. Those results will ensure the ketch will perform well over long cruising distances, as well as display a quick turn on the regatta course.
Richard Bouzaid, head of design for Doyle Sails New Zealand and the Doyle Group, comments: “The experience that all the members of a design team bring will – and has in this case – change the initial specifications and help to create something that will be optimal for the owner and their expectations for the boat. Advantages of our early involvement include early load analysis, aero analysis and FEA work, all of which are taken into account when decisions are made on deck layout, mast loadings and overall loadings. This is imperative at this stage of the project to reduce the chances of changes later in the build.”
“This is a project we’re really looking forward to working on,” comments Chris McMaster, managing director of Doyle Sails New Zealand. “Combining our Stratis technology with the expertise of mast manufacturers, Rondal, and working in collaboration with the design team, allowed us to create a sails package which will really perform for the new owners.”
The main and mizzen are being manufactured to the Rondal Boom Rolling system with integrated reefing. Roller headsails will be comprised of blade jib, owners staysail, heavy duty delivery staysail, then a reacher/code0 which will be set on a removable furling torque stay to reduce windage.
The downwind inventory of AQUARIUS yacht will be made up of a full running AP gennaker and mizzen staysail; both of which have been crafted to perform well in Bucket racing with full crew, as well as under regular cruising conditions.
Doyle Sails New Zealand’s Stratis’ innovative pre-impregnated fibre technology ensures flexibility as well as strength, with every fibre on the sail load-bearing. The resulting sails are lighter than conventional panel sails, with notably less stretch, which sees them hold the integrity of their shape better, and for longer.
