German architect Werner Sobeck is to give new life to the 1966-built Blohm+Voss Dock 10 in Port Hamburg, giving it a covered roof and integrating it into the Hamburg harbour.

Dock 10 currently has an inner dock length of 272m/892ft and an interior beam of 44.2m/145ft. Lürssen is continuing to invest €13 million in the modernisation of its Hamburg shipyard and the revitalised facilities will not only offer improved occupational health and safety but also help to reduce emissions and ensure that the shipyard is better equipped to undertake confidential projects in the changeable Hamburg weather.

“The renovation enables us to significantly expand the range of repairs and refit services for existing and potential customers of yachts, naval and cruise ships. It also further increases the appeal of the location, especially for our yacht customers,” commented Dr. Klaus Borgschulte, Chairman of the Supervisory Board for Blohm+Voss. “In addition, we will significantly improve the working conditions for our employees and make ourselves less dependent on the weather. Thanks to the new roof, we will be able to also significantly reduce noise emissions and energy consumption.”

The design was presented on the 29th of January 2020 by representatives of the city, shipyard and architect’s office, and features a framework of panels along the length of the dock that can alternately be arranged inwards or outwards. A translucent membrane allows plenty of natural light through to the interior and the central section of the north side of the dock will act as a showcase for harbourside visitors. Should the Owner wish the project to remain private, a custom drape will ensure complete privacy.

The structure is due for construction from mid-2020, making use of the adjacent 351m/1151.6ft Elbe 17 dock for Dock 10 and a superyacht to continue construction. Dock 10 is expected to be completed by the end of 2020 when it and the yacht is contained will head to the Lürssen Berne shipyard in Bremen until the vessel is completed. Dock 10 will return to Hamburg in 2022.
