The very first hybrid sailboat constructed at the renowned Southern Wind shipyard hits the water! The sailing yacht NYUMBA, penned by Farr Yacht Design with interior and exterior design by Nauta Design is the fourth unit of the SW96 series and boasts a GT deck configuration. She was built for an owner that was in search of a high-performance, efficient yacht to cruise around the globe that, at the same time, would be capable of competing in the most prestigious regattas.
Nyumba belongs to the yard’s ‘smart custom’ offering, allowing the owner to take advantage of the previously proven construction that reflects the yard and design team’s experience. The owner then customised his vessel to reflect his vision of the perfect vessel, which would include a stunning modern design, incorporate comfort, reliability and above all sustainability.
Being an electric-hybrid sailing yacht her power and propulsion system were created in collaboration with BAE Systems, a multinational company that designs and manufactures technology-leading solutions. Their patented HybridGen® system is engineered to be compliant with the world’s most stringent environmental rules, with zero emissions capability and a HydroGeneration mode to recharge the Lithium-ion energy storage when under sail. The BAE System’s next-generation hardware provides the highest system efficiency, allowing the owner to cruise noise-free with zero emissions for longer periods of time.
Some of the main features of the yacht include a full carbon hull, prepreg side and foredeck, lifting keel, twin rudder, carbon rigging and an upgraded hydraulic winches package, as well as a garage to host her 4.5-metre tender. Guest on board will surely enjoy the extra large swimming platform for easy access to the water.
On the inside, NYUMBA welcomes guests with a warm and comfortable design. The owner’s cabin is located forward while two guest cabins are amidship. The crew quarters with the galley have been placed aft. The main saloon is spacious with an open-space layout. The fourth cabin area has been converted into an additional place to relax and includes a comfortable TV area with a sofa.
The yacht is currently in the final stages of construction, with delivery planned for January 2023.
