Sailing yacht Mariette is one of the largest competitors taking part in the Pendennis Cup Regatta with a length overall of 42.05m. Built in the USA in 1915, she is a stunning Herreshoff designed classic schooner. Mariette’s pre-summer refit began in February and has been completed with the reinstatement of her huge sailing rig, with the mast alone measuring over 36m long. The complete programme of work included an engineering overhaul and a full refit of her generator space, including the replacement of her generators.
To celebrate a successful refurbishment and as a thank you to Pendennis Charlie Rowe, Mariette’s captain, invited members of the refit team to be guests on board the vessel during her 2 day sea trial. “Mariette is back in the water and ready to sail again. We have had an excellent refit with Pendennis and I appreciate all the effort the crew and yard guys have put into improving the boat. I thought that the best way to say thanks was to invite the yard employees to come sailing with us, so that we all can enjoy the use of the beautiful yacht that everyone has been working hard on these last few months.” The sea trial proved an exciting experience in more ways than one as the crew spotted dolphins and a Basking Shark in Falmouth Bay.
Later this month Mariette will be making her way to Cowes to sail with other large classics in the Westward Cup. The fleet will then proceed to Falmouth prior to the start of the Pendennis Cup which will run from the 9th-14th August with five days of exhilarating racing off the Cornish coast. With a further 6 confirmed competitors including Adela, Mariquita, Velacarina, Tomahawk, Pinuccia and Zarik, we anticipate a very busy week with 150-200 owners, crew and guests attending.
Pendennis is organizing the Cup in conjunction with the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.
