America’s Cup Trophy is the most prestigious trophy in yachting as well as one of the most iconic symbols of victory in the world. She is expected to reach the Dennis Conner’s North Cove today, on June 24, 2013. The trophy will be available for public viewing onboard superyacht Arabella, anchored on the south side of the marina. The public viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m.
The America’s Cup is steeped in history and lore. North Cove’s Patron is Dennis Conner, who captivated the imagination of our nation in 1987 when he won the Cup back from Australia. In the process, Dennis appeared on the covers of both Time magazine and Sports Illustrated, generating a new era of popularity and interest in the sport of sailing. Last year, Dennis was voted by the sailing public as “America’s Greatest Sailor.”
Since Dennis won the Cup in 1987, the Cup has traveled to New Zealand and then to Switzerland (although it was raced in Valencia, Spain). There, Larry Ellison’s Team Oracle won the Cup back for the United States. The next round of America’s Cup races will take place this summer on San Francisco Bay. These races are already controversial with technology challenging 72 foot catamarans. You will probably hear a lot more about the America’s Cup this summer as the competition unfolds.
Today, and one day only, New Yorkers have a rare opportunity to see the America’s Cup in person. The trophy will be on display from 4 to 6 p.m. onboard Arabella yacht docked at Dennis Conner’s North Cove.
This is the trophy which stirs the embers of competition and causes the world’s best sailors and some of the richest people to spend vast amounts of time, energy and money in an attempt to win. You can walk down to Dennis Conner’s North Cove today, see the Cup in person and feel some of its magic and allure.
