Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter waterfront is currently being developed, with five new attractions on schedule for completion in 2011 – and the Rugby World Cup hosted by New Zealand. This latter major attraction will no doubt see a number of superyacht owners making their way to Auckland, New Zealand, in search of marina berth spaces to base themselves.

John Dalzell, Chief Executive and Project Director of Sea+City Projects Ltd, the company managing the revitalisation of Wynyard Quarter on behalf of partners Auckland Regional Holdings and Auckland City Council, commented: “Over the last five years we’ve cleared about eight hectares of tanks off the 16 hectares of land in the Sea+City Project area within Wynyard Quarter, and have comprehensively completed planning, design and preparatory work. It is now great to see work going on above ground and to know that we’re on track to welcome people down here in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Key areas planned to be complete include North Wharf on Jellicoe Harbour, Silo Park at the western end of Jellicoe Street and the public plaza at the eastern end. Wynyard Crossing, which connects Wynyard Quarter to the CBD and rest of the waterfront, and Auckland City Council’s Viaduct Events Centre will also be complete.

The developers are keen to offer superyachts another opportunity to base and refit their yachts, one that will compete on the international stage. Whilst in conceptual stages, Site 18 is planned to incorporate a sail loft and roof-top rig yard, a high capacity boat lift, a 12 storey building with apartments on the upper levels and new berthage for vessels up to 90m.

This is in addition to the four superyacht berths currently under construction on the western side of Cement Wharf. This development includes three 95m berths and one 60m berth – all scheduled for completion by September 2010.

This entire waterfront development is set to transform Auckland over the next 15-20 years, making it a key destination for all yacht owners, sailors and crew – especially of the superyacht variety, evident in the focus on much larger yachts.
