The italian luxury yacht builder Azimut Grande of the Azimut–Benetti Group, announced that the new Azimut Grande 140 superyacht will boast the new wave-piercing hull coupled to a lightweight pod system, as a result of a new partnership with Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce will manufacture, exclusively to the shipyard, state-of-the-art carbon podded propulsion system series, specifically created for the all-new D2P Displacement to Planing hull with the “Wave piercer” bow.
Rolls Royce Carbon Azipull 65C
Thanks to the agreement signed in exclusive with Azimut Grande, Rolls Royce will bring a revolutionary innovation on board the line of this new generation: the Rolls-Royce carbon Azipull 65c pod.
The Rolls-Royce pods are able to produce over 2.000 kW power each. The main purpose has been to develop the best hull shape for the Rolls-Royce propulsion pod, according to the layout/exterior model design brief, optimising all the hydrodynamic aspects as well as the hull tunnel, to obtain the best possible water flow over the propellers.
The D2P_Displacement to Planning hull with the “Wave Piercer” bow has been conceived specifically for the Rolls-Royce pod propulsion system. Through an optimisation process of all the geometrical aspects of the stern tunnel and those related to hydro-dynamical coefficients, the improved propulsive efficiency of the pod drives compared with conventional axis line propulsions has been optimised.
The innovative Rolls-Royce propulsion system, an azimuthal pod which allows control over the drag of each pod through 360°, guarantees optimal manoeuvrability at high speed, but also at low speed and while docking. Dynamic behaviour and general hull manoeuvrability at different speeds have also been accurately studied.
Rolls-Royce Azipull 65c – Key Features
A transmission with azimuthal pulling propellers (rotatable through 360°), permits easy handling with a simple joystick, enabling the optimisation of interior “noble” spaces thanks to the shifting towards the stern of its center of gravity. Another advantage of the Rolls-Royce Azipull 65c transmission is it’s carbon construction, with a “twisted” profile – giving an improved hydrodynamic efficiency – with integrated exhaust emissions and a fin which improves course stability at different speeds. An expressly designed 5-6 blade propeller which finally optimizes overall performance.
