In the final quarter of 2013, Spain modified the Special Tax on Particular Means of Transport (IEDMT) to make exempt from tax all yachts exclusively for charter, and the result has been substantial.
Without any limits placed upon charter yacht length, the popularity for luxury charters in and around Spain has grown considerably year on year since 2013 – from only 31 yachts above 20m available in the Balearic Islands in 2013 to 125 in 2016 – quadruple the number of yachts for charter over a three year period.
The change in rules allows for yachts owned by a non-resident company to charter exempt from tax, as long as the persons chartering the yacht are non-residents of Spain and do not own an establishment in the country. These new rules are closer to the legislation used in other EU member state countries such as Italy and France, which receive the vast majority of the 600 or so 25m+ yachts for charter in the Western Mediterranean every summer.
