Terence Disdale, Björn Johansson, Igor Lobanov, Nuvolari & Lenard, Sam Sorgiovanni, Andrew Winch,…the list reads like a Who’s Who of the world-renowned yacht designers. While Oceanco has partnered with plenty of the top independent designers, they also have their own in-house design team, based in Monaco and headed up by Patrick Casanova, who has been with Oceanco since 1998, and his colleagues, Emilie Le Garf, Florian Gauthrot, as well as Gilles Vernhet.

Although Oceanco’s design team works effectively in competition with other world-renowned designers, they also provide support to outside studios. What makes Casanova and his team so effective is that they operate in close conjunction with Oceanco’s R&D Projects team to be able to better analyse client requests and at the same time keep abreast of design trends so as to come up with new and exciting proposals. A case in point is the 91.5-metre project that exists in several distinctive design packages from Adriel Rollins (DP005 yacht Project Lumen), Luiz de Basto (mega yacht DP009 concept) and Patrick Casanova himself (DP031).

With DP031 superyacht concept, Casanova transformed a fully tested and engineered Oceanco 90m ice-breaker platform into a new yacht. He worked diligently on maintaining all the stringent technical rules mandated by MCA without compromising aesthetics and onboard comfort. “It’s always a challenge to incorporate PYC requirements into a design”, admits Casanova. “But it is extremely fulfilling to transform the perceived drawbacks, such as extra lifeboats and fire zones, into advantages.” Indeed, Casanova has succeeded in determining solutions resultant in a racy exterior profile with a timeless classic bow that belies the yacht’s huge overall length. “We wanted to break away from the current modern design trends and produce something that is eye-catching but will also withstand the test of time,” continues the designer.

And herein lies the key to good design: to create a yacht that is original and refreshing without imposing a trendy design that will quickly become dated. “It’s a question of balancing what the market expects with what will endure the test of time,” explains Casanova. “We try to surprise but not shock the client. That means avoiding anything too radical or complicated and combining traditional elements with more up-to-date features.” DP031’s audacious yet elegant profile is emphasized by the inclined fore-windows on upper and bridge decks into a sleek stretched profile.

The vast aft main deck hosts a 9.5 x 6.5m pool with depths of 1.5m and is one of the largest pools ever designed on a yacht. Motor yacht DP 031 concept is equipped with a fully certified helipad on the bridge deck; a comprehensive gym area on the sun deck; a tender garage that transforms into a vast beach club once one of the two limo tenders is in the water and that opens onto the sea from the starboard side.

On the forward part of the upper deck, the owner’s suite hosts a luxury stateroom, an impressive ensuite bathroom, an extended dressing area and an office, with two adjacent twin VIP cabins and a staff cabin. This owner’s suite has private access to a whirlpool, sunbathing area and wide open deck spaces. On the aft deck, the owners and family can enjoy conformable seating in exterior sofas and dining al fresco with panoramic views.

On the main deck are six double guests’ cabins and one VIP suite, all with ensuite facilities with direct access to the main salon, another al-fresco dining area for 20 persons and numerous exterior seating and lounge/bar areas to comfortably relax.

Luxury yacht DP031 concept serves to illustrate another cornerstone of Oceanco’s design philosophy. “The problem is not so much coming up with a pleasing exterior profile or interior layout”, says Casanova. “It’s more about incorporating the features and amenities that make all the difference.” Today’s owners come to the table with very precise ideas of what they’re looking for. Meeting an owner’s expectations and finding solutions to design challenges is what Oceanco’s design team does best.
