The annual Charter Yacht Show heralds the start of the Caribbean charter season when luxury crewed yachts and charter brokers come together in the Virgin Islands to showcase and promote crewed sailing vacations in the area. This year, Sol will be partnering with the Charter Yacht Society of the BVI, the event host and organizer, to support the success of the four-day event. The show will run from November 4 through 7 at Village Cay Marina, Tortola.
The event serves as a forum for booking agents to view the yachts, meet with the captains and crews and visit the vacation hot spots in the territory. The first hand knowledge gained by attending the show is key for the agents’ successful promotion of the products, services and destination to the discerning market place.
The organizer holds several contests during the show giving captains and crew a prime opportunity to exhibit to the brokers their yachts, culinary skills and other innovative services. The awards are well received by the winners and used as a marketing tool to attract business.
This year Sol will provide the prizes for first place in three different categories: Best Multihull over 50’, Best Multihull under 50’ and Best Monohull. The winners in each category will receive two round trip tickets from Beef Island, Tortola to San Juan, Puerto Rico. A panel of judges comprising booking agents will view all yachts and meet the crew aboard before voting on the best crew/yacht combination in each category. The prizes will be awarded at the final dinner to be hosted at Peg Leg’s restaurant, Nanny Cay Marina on Sunday, November 7.
In addition to the prizes and in keeping with its Health, Safety and Environmental policy, Sol will be providing each participating yacht with oil spill pads. When placed on top of a spill, the marine absorbent pads will soak up oil-based liquids such as fuel but will repel water.
“Our affiliation with the Charter Yacht Show complements our sponsorship of other regattas in the region,” said Deborah Benjamin, country manager for Sol petroleum. “We provide the fuel for the majority of marinas in the BVI and we are serious about working with the yachting industry to promote and facilitate a responsible approach to the sea and marine life. The oil absorbent pads are easy to stow away and use as necessary – it’s a simple concept but a highly effective way to minimize the environmental impact of any oil-based spills.”
The Charter Yacht Show is the largest of its kind in the Virgin Islands and was already booked out with seventy yachts by August. The Charter Yacht Society of the BVI itself has a membership of eighty-five yachts that are based in the BVI. The crewed yacht industry in the Bristish Virgin Islands generates more than $35 million dollars of business annually from high net-worth sailing charter guests who cruise the islands and enjoy the hospitality and natural beauty of the territory.
Sol is the largest petroleum company in the BVI and supplies the marine community at Hodges Creek, Nanny Cay Marina, the Moorings, Village Cay, Bitter End, Biras Creek, Peter Island, Guana Island, Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and Leverick Bay. Sol is a committed supporter of community initiatives including the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, the Leverick Bay Poker Run, the Glass Project and is a partner of the BVI Athletics Association.
