Following the successful 2012 MYS, CharterWorld was invited to view one of Italy’s custom luxury yacht builders and refit facilities, Mondo Marine, providing us with an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse of the great amount of work and dedication that Mondo Marine put into each one of their superyachts, be it a refit, repair or a new build. Amongst their latest luxury new-built vessels is the elegant OKKO, launched in June. Charter yacht OKKO was on display in Monaco with two new exciting projects unveiled aboard: the M50 superyacht by Hot Lab as well as the 45m Blade by Francesco Paszkowski.
Despite the global economic situation, Mondo Marine continues to succeed as one of the exclusive Italian luxury yacht builders thanks to their dedication, excellent quality, ability to construct yachts entirely in-house as well as their expertise in yacht refit. In fact, the yard’s capacity is currently at its limit, unable to accept any more refits. These projects include refits that comprise a number of different refit steps, some of which have started last year and will continue right through to the next year. Works currently in process include anything from lengthening the vessel, paint jobs on vessels larger than 60 metres as well as structural modifications.
Luxury yachts currently under build at the shipyards include:
– 41 m motor yacht by Cor D Rover to be launched in June, 2013
– 50 m superyacht by Hot Lab – a new project presented at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show this year
– 54 m luxury yacht by Luca Dini

More about Mondo Marine construction, repair and refit
Established in 1978 by Ferruccio and Elio Stroppiana, the yard is strategically and very conveniently located in Savona offering its clients world-class construction, repair and refit facilities, excellent know-how, quality workmanship in addition to the favourable factors like the sea area belonging to the yard, the dry land facilities and very well equipped wharf. Mondo Marine is well known for their beautiful custom made yachts, completely created at the yard, many of which have become popular and excellent charter yachts. Perhaps these words from the shipyard’s founders describe their work the best:
“From a design on paper to the finished yacht, every Mondo Marine design is inspired by emotion. Our work is always based on owner’s demands, and we find a way to fulfil their dreams. Creating a yacht’s interior is a little like dressing a person – in this case, the owner!”
The yard spreads over a seafront area of 35,500 square metres, with 9,500 square metres under cover. The facilities incorporate 100 metres of jetty space for maxiyacht mooring, an 820-ton travel lift – which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean, as well as a 300 ton trolley. The yard however is constantly evolving and there are new developmental plans for the near future.
More than 60 luxury yachts have been constructed to date with many of them commissioned by well known clients and celebrities, thanks to Mondo Marine’s professional approach, excellent quality and strategic position, allowing its clients collaborating on the project in a maximum privacy.
One of the important projects the company has created is the spectacular expedition yacht TRIBU built in 2007 and the first yacht to be awarded with the Green Star certification by RINA, showing the owner’s environmental commitment through a series of technical criteria. She is also a very popular charter yacht available in the South Pacific.
Mondo Marine provides clients with a completely full-cycle production, right from cutting the hull sheets and has exported its commitment to excellence worldwide through products where every detail expresses Italian skill and talent. The aluminium and steel are processed by the NAV.CO company, controlled by Mondo Marine, in line with ABS, Lloyds Register and RINA requirements. This ensures extreme precision plus comprehensive monitoring and adherence to agreed delivery times.
The choice of on-board systems, which are drawn from the most technologically advanced on offer, combined with the naval engineering of the water lines and hydrodynamics, the result of in-house research carried out by the Mondo Marine Engineering division, enables Mondo Marine to create crafts offering exceptional speed and silence, making sailing extremely safe and comfortable.
The division also carries out any type of maintenance and refit projects on vessels measuring up to 65 metres in length. The works could include anything from hull and interior structural modifications, furnishing restyling through to instrument upgrades. The shipyard has dedicated workshops for any mechanical servicing, carpentry, metalwork and dedicated painting zones. Mondo Marine has achieved world-wide success in the superyacht repair and refit sector, and thanks to the great facilities and the sea area belonging to the yard, Mondo Marine Repair & Refit is also able to carry out works on afloat boats.
