This year’s summer season saw the prestigious Silo Marina, nestled in the fabulous Auckland yacht holiday location, host a record number of visits. These included the outstanding 134-metre mega yacht SERENE, the largest yacht that has ever visited the fantastic New Zealand shores.
Silo Marina was designed as a purpose built facility in 2010 to cater for the increasing number of superyachts visiting New Zealand waters. Since then, the marina has significantly increased its berth capacity from four berths in 2010 to current 10 berths.
The latest summer season from October 2014 to April 2015 saw 28 visits to the marina. The manager of Silo Marina, Luke Wigglesworth, comments: “Due to our relative small size to other like marinas internationally, we’re able to also provide a more boutique service and better cater for the specific demands of our clientele.”
One of the largest vessels to visit Silo Marina in recent months is the 134-metre motor yacht Serene that currently represents the largest private vessel that has ever visited New Zealand waters. Moreover, the previous summer saw the 119-metre Philippe Starck-designed superyacht ‘A’ dock in Silo Marina.
Waterfront Auckland Chief Executive, John Dalzell, said to have the superyacht visits like these has been vital to sustaining a key part of the marine industry. “It’s been great to see an influx of these luxury vessels appearing on the Auckland waterfront in recent years as every time we get one in the dock we’re talking about more jobs and apprenticeships for the region in the rapidly growing refit sector. Silo Marina has been pivotal to this, and illustrates how public investment in infrastructure is essential as a catalyst for economic growth.”
