The 78ft Mylne Classic sailing yacht Alinda V, has slipped quietly back into the water following an extensive 12 month refit at Southampton Yacht Services. This beautiful, Gaff Ketch was first launched by Alfred Mylne in 1934 built by Alexander Stevens and Sons in Glasgow and has since spent long periods in the eastern Mediterranean.
She returned from Greece where she has been for some 50 years under the same crew to have an extensive refit including machinery systems, hull structure, deck fittings and rig.
At the same time the opportunity was taken to re-plan the interior layout to suit the owner’s current needs.
The interior was stripped out to the iron frames and the teak planking, engine and tank spaces were scanned and fully engineered in CATIA / CAD software. New systems were drawn and fitted in 3D prior to installation, enabling the engineering team to work concurrently with painters, joiners and shipwrights. The engine room was extensively detailed to accommodate a new main engine, two generator sets, hydraulic system, watermaker and air-conditioning, with new fuel and water tanks, batteries, water pumps and a water treatment plant in the original tank spaces.
The accommodation was slightly modified to incorporate ensuite heads for all three guest cabins; the saloon updated to include a chart table and improved stowage, while the galley and crew cabins benefitted from the remodelling of the galley and crew heads. The joinery faithfully copied the style of the original with new oak panelling reflecting the original patterns. Lightweight granite and marble surfaces were fitted to the heads and galley with fixtures and fittings styled to suit the period.
New lightweight and conventional Granite was installed to the Galley Top for its unrivalled durability. In the cabins Lightweight Marble was used for the Vanity Tops, Bathroom Floors, Showers Walls and Shower Soles for its unsurpassed natural beauty. GRAMA BLEND Lightweight stone was specified for its incredible lightness, thinness, strength and ease of installation which was carried out by SYS own joiners with the backup of GRAMA BLEND UK technical support and on site guidance.
On deck, the rig had previously been modified in the 1960’s to a Bermudan format. By fitting in-mast furling masts and furlers, the team at SYS were able to extend the spars allowing classic yacht Alinda V to be fitted with her original 3000sq.ft. sail plan. Combined with a full suite of hydraulic winches and power pack, this will allow sailing yacht Alinda V to be easily sailed shorthanded. The original windlass and steering systems were refurbished, new anchor systems installed in the hull and mooring systems improved with additional fairleads. All deck equipment was returned to cast bronze fittings. Deck hatches and the doghouse were all discreetly modified to create more space, light and ventilation. The cockpit coamings were extended to incorporate navigation repeaters from the doghouse instruments.
Robert Kathro, MD at Southampton Yacht Services commented: “The team at SYS is justifiably proud of the work we have completed. It was a pleasure to work on Alinda V, she looks and feels splendid, and the objectives of the project were achieved in full.”
The result of this extensive refit is that S/Y Alinda V is instantly recognisable, both above and below deck, as the pedigree classic she was designed and built to be. However, her classic lines hide a multitude of modern and practical engineering solutions that, together with her new fixtures and fittings, ensure she is perfectly equipped for life in the 21st century.
The sailing yacht Alinda V started her refit at the Southampton Yacht Services Ltd in Autumn 2009 and was completed and re-launched in August 2010 and is currently enjoying its first voyage
