Congratulations! With the help of your broker you’ve managed to find the perfect yacht, available for your ideal dates and dream itinerary, and you’ve negotiated a great price to boot. All signs point to a fantastic charter holiday! But what about the crew?
Despite what you might think, having a fantastic crew is just as important – if not more so – than finding the perfect yacht in the perfect location. While it’s pretty difficult not to enjoy any private charter experience, the crew is the single most important factor which can elevate your charter experience from a fantastic holiday to a transcendent experience.
A great crew is like a well-oiled machine…they have learned how to adapt to a variety of different needs and preferences quickly, efficiently, professionally and with a smile. Over their years of experience, they’ve developed a variety of unique skills and talents among them that when woven together in the right mix, will seem to answer to your every need before even you realize what you want, and provide the experience of a lifetime.
“Amanda, The trip was absolutely sensational. To a point, my family members are saying it was the best vacation ever. We loved the British Virgin Islands. But Erik and his crew really made the trip. They were absolutely wonderful. Took impeccable care of us and went way beyond the call of duty in many respects…” Guests on M/Y ARION, 2019
It goes without saying that the Captain should be intimately familiar with the cruising area and the best places to see and be; be it the most popular destinations in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, or more exotic and remote destinations such as South East Asia or the South Pacific. That the Chef should have a range of culinary styles and skills up his sleeve, and be able to accommodate any medical or dietary requirements. That the interior staff should keep the yacht impeccable and provide all those extra touches (fresh flowers, gorgeous table settings, and a high level of service) and that the deck crew maintain a smoothly functioning and gleaming yacht and toys. But there is more to consider.
Are you a family group with small children to entertain? There’s a crew who loves and caters to kids. Are you a fit and active bunch? There’s a yacht and a crew focused on watersports and other activities like hiking, yoga, onboard fitness training and more. A group of “foodie” couples seeking an indulgent and elegant week on the sea? There is a crew who will offer discrete “silver service” including personal massage and spa services and the very finest level of innovative and tantalizing cuisine.
Having a crew who “speaks your language” – both literally and figuratively – is what truly makes the difference between a great week on the water and a yacht you want to return to again and again. They “get” you – they understand your needs, how (and when) you like things, delight in your children’s antics and indulge them with treasure hunts or tea parties, lend an extra hand for an unsteady elderly guest or teach your group how to dive, waterski or kitesurf. They care for you, your family and friends with warmth, kindness and an attention that goes above and beyond your expectations.
A key component to being a successful charter consultant is knowing the yachts and crews and making the best recommendations to clients. Myself and the rest of the CharterWorld “crew” regularly attend all of the major international charter shows (and most of the smaller ones) exactly for this reason. It is an opportunity to not only inspect the yachts but to meet and get to know their crews so that we can better assist in matching you to the perfect yacht….and crew!….that will create memories to last a lifetime.
