Yes, it’s true! The British Virgin Islands government has announced that fuel will be duty-free for mega yachts in an effort to attract more of the 100m+/328ft+ vessels to the Caribbean archipelago and a popular destination for charter yachts.
An amendment to the current customs regulation laws will allow mega-yachts to cruise through the territory for a specified duration and take advantage of duty-free fuel purchases:
“At this point, it is important to point out that in order to boost mega-yachts sailing and remaining in our waters, the Customs regulations will be amended immediately to allow them to purchase duty-free fuel, once they remain in our territory three days or more,” Premier Andrew Fahie stated during his recent budget address for the 2020 fiscal year.
“This will be a step in the right direction towards encouraging mega-yachts to make the BVIs their home port.”
Cruise liners are also expected to receive a boon, with the government taking note of the industry’s desire to stay in port up to midnight.
