Walcon Marine, the world renowned company specializing in the design as well as construction of yacht marinas, has recently completed an expansion of Chatham Maritime Marina. Owned by well known marine operator MDL and situated next to Chatham’s famous historic dockyard, the marina now boasts 360 berths for yachts of up to 24 metres in LOA.
The project consisted of the extension of two main piers and the addition of 60 new berths. Chatham Maritime Marina had been operating at full capacity for some time. With its proximity to London it has long been a popular place for yacht owners living in or near the capital to keep their boats.
Walcon won the contract based on a number of considerations including the quality and longevity of the pontoons, recognition of the standards of service that the company provides and its competitive pricing.
With the Walcon Wizard, the company’s floating piling rig, too wide for the lock gates the initial piling required was undertaken by Walcon Marine using its mobile rig. This required a certain amount of ingenuity to get it on‐site via some private land, but any obstacles were swiftly overcome and on gaining access the rig drove in 11 steel tube piles to anchor the new piers. Thereafter Walcon System 21 pontoons were used both for the berths and, in a doublewidth configuration, for the 4‐metre wide walkways. The installation finished ahead of schedule, taking just three weeks.
The newly expanded Chatham Maritime Marina is now fully open for business with its new Walcon pontoons providing a safe and stable environment for owners, guests and crew.
