Sunreef Yachts, the world-renowned company specializing in custom design, took another big step forward and created a folding mast on one of its superyacht-catamarans above 80ft, exclusively upon the request of one of the company’s clients. This represents the very first folding mast construction for superyachts in the domain of yacht customization.
The idea of a sailing catamaran with a folding mast came up in order to lower the airdraft from 38.5 m to 24 m. Such a feature had never been fitted on a yacht of this size, let alone on a catamaran measuring over 80ft. The carbon fibre mast folds forward in its middle section at a 90 degree angle. The mast’s base features a set of two automatic cylinders, absorbing the rotation of the mast in the folded position. It folds just above the staysail chainplate, so the bottom part of the mast can still be supported by the rig when the mast is folded. Another innovation here is the flexible, custom designed, individually manufactured forestay furler. It can be bent in a circle of a 3 meter diameter.
