The 60th Giraglia Rolex Cup was one of the most exciting races in the regatta’s history and saw the race record annihilated by the McConaghy built sailing yacht Esimit Europa 2 designed by Reichel/Pugh.The previous race record of 18h 03m 15s was set by Neville Crichton in 100′ Alfa Romeo back in 2008, and this year saw the same boat under new ownership beat the record by an amazing 3h 06s. The 100ft canting keel maxi yacht Esimit Europa 2 led the 170 boat fleet when it left Saint Tropez on Wednesday for the 242 mile race finishing over 30 miles ahead of the next boat, arriving at San Remo in 14h 56m 16s.
“This year’s Giraglia Rolex Cup regatta was absolutely one of the greatest sailing experiences in my entire life. It was not easy, since the race was rough and fast not allowing us to relax even for a second. I am extremely proud of the crew, they did an amazing job, and happy that all our investments in the yacht very well paid off. I am hoping for new course records at the upcoming regattas,” said Igor Simcic, founder of the Esimit Europa project.
