Last week’s Monaco Yacht Show saw the Global Marine Communications (GMC) host breakfast meetings on board the 65m motor yacht White Rose of Drachs. The goal of these meetings was to explain how it is possible to best manage the internet on yachts, as well as give an overview on their addition of more coverage, comprising the Atlantic & USA for internet services and their ViTO service.
Many vessels have very high Internet billings without understanding why. GMC has developed a concept that lets owners and captains understand how they can manage their internet service to get a better experience online by prioritizing traffic to certain groups of people or by time and speed as well as data, this way everyone on board can use the internet without someone causing any issues to others.
During the Breakfast meetings GMC explained how their B.O.S.S.™ and the ViTO systems work. B.O.S.S.™ guarantees high priority users internet access capacity allowing them to go about their work without worrying what others are doing. B.O.S.S.™ does this “gently” and without employing the current, rather crude, approach of disconnecting all crew from the network when the owner is on board.
B.O.S.S.™ can even ensure primary users (Owner/Officers) always have priority access for their traffic giving them 100% of the availability if required with no additional management overhead on the ship’s master or system administrator. In addition B.O.S.S.™ ensures only authorised users have access to the ship’s network and bandwidth by providing a secure login “token” to each member of the vessel. It can also select specific schedule for which crew members can have access.
ViTO (Virtual ITOfficer) permits anyone on board to get assistance when a problem arises.
The GMC team offers a 24/7 technical support service that can assist over the phone or by taking control, with permission, and assist in checking what the issues may be.
GMC can provide a contended (shared) and dedicated (1:1) internet (VSAT) service in the Mediterranean and the USA plus the Atlantic.
With GMC on Wednesday were Yachting Pages who pre-launched their online version of the SYOG (Super Yacht Owner’s Guide) with a live presentation of their new website which was then launched the same day at the Monaco Yacht Show. A virtual version of their guide.
On Thursday morning, GMC were joined by Paolo Bianchi from MDL Marinas who presented their new Marina di Stabia near Capri, Facing Vesuvius, this amazing marina can host up to 900 yachts up to 120 meters. The facilities around are top notch and their first 2014 summer was a big success.
