The newest Hylas 70, Archangel, has been launched with a GMT carbon fiber mast featuring an innovative in-mast furling system. Archangel will be on display at Strictly Sail Miami, February 17-21, 2011.

“Archangel’s owner is an exceptionally experienced yachtsman with demanding performance expectations for his boat and her gear,” says Jay Kiley, Director of Sales and Marketing for GMT Composites. “His requirements included short-handed sailing capabilities, along with an in-mast furling system with infinite push-button reefing abilities.”
Sailing yacht Archangel’s 95-foot carbon fiber mast saved more than 700 pounds aloft versus a standard aluminum mast. The result is a stiffer boat with remarkably reduced heeling and pitching, compared to a traditionally sparred yacht. In addition, carbon is much stronger, pound-for-pound, than aluminum. GMT Composites’ masts are manufactured with hand-laid pre-preg carbon, post-cured in a computer-controlled oven…the same techniques utilized for manufacturing aircraft parts.
The Archangel project is part of GMT’s continuing relationship with Hylas Yachts, providing the respected builder with improved, custom-built, high-performance masts and booms.
