The title of highest placed Swan at the 2012 Rolex Volcano Race has been received by Marco Roldofi’s Swan 80 sailing yacht Berenice Bis (ITA). Running from May 19 to 25, this popular race took place some 400-nautical miles from Gaeta, in southern Italy, to the island of Capri and then from Capri to the Aeolian Islands and back again.
Swan 80 luxury yacht Berenice Bis was the fifth boat to cross the finishing line in Capri on Leg One of the voyage, in the process ousting two Mini Maxis on overall handicap, and claiming first place on corrected time.
At the time Marco Roldofi commented: “We had a great race, making very few mistakes, navigating the islands very well, and when there was a change in the wind we were in the right place to take advantage. It is still a surprise because there are many fast and strong boats.”
Former America’s Cup sailor Tiziano Nava is Berenice’s tactician and revealed; “The strong winds arrived later than expected but the last stretch to Capri was quite fast as we reached up to 20 knots. We had the sensation of being close to the larger boats and the boats behind were penalised by the drop in wind after our arrival.”
The following day the fleet set off on Leg Two, the 300-nautical mile voyage around the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea where the superyacht Berenice Bis finished a very respectable 6th place giving them a podium 3rd place finish overall. Berenice Bis received the coveted Swan prize during the traditional Rolex party at the iconic La Canzone del Mare.
