CharterWorld brokers are often asked where in the world offers the most unique yacht charter vacations. So, as we approach the 2024 charter season, we look beyond the horizon to one of the most beautiful island groups in the South Pacific … Indonesia.
Given its location where the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific, the Indonesian archipelago – a collection of over 17,000 exotic islands – is a treasure trove of diverse landscapes perfect to explore on board a luxury charter yacht. Of the inhabited islands, some of the most well-known are Raja Ampat, Bali, Java and Komodo – with its unique prehistoric inhabitant.
Raja Ampat
The name Raja Ampat means Four Kings and refers to the four main islands of this beautiful archipelago with around 1,500 islands, cays and shoals in total. The sheer numbers and diversity of marine life and Raja Ampat’s huge pristine coral reef systems are a scuba dream come true – and a fantastic site for snorkelers too. Charter yachts are usually equipped with snorkelling equipment and diving can be arranged in advance through your charter broker.
Just like the underwater world, the scenery above water is equally mesmerising. While your yacht is at anchor, enjoy some quiet time kayaking around the picturesque bays full of orchids and other tropical plants or simply relax lying on one of the spectacular beaches taking in the sounds of nature.
Locals tend to live quietly in fishing communities but in the larger tourist hubs the Papuan will greet visitors with folk songs, traditional fishing demonstrations and a show of local handicrafts.
Bali
Perhaps the island with the most established tourist industry, Bali remains a quintessential Indonesian experience with a year-round tropical climate and an abundance of natural beauty. Known as the ‘land of the gods’ Bali is a magical place where the ancient culture and Hindu religion is celebrated in temples across the island’s reported thousand temples. Visitors can find demonstrations of a vibrant arts scene and experience local dance, music and handicrafts including jewellery, stone carving and painting.
From your luxury charter yacht you can enjoy everything this wonderful island has to offer on its shores, from diving to paddle boarding, golden beaches and relaxing spas plus a cosmopolitan restaurant scene and night life.
Java
Home to more than half of Indonesia’s population, Java offers travellers modern luxuries side by side with ancient temples and natural beauty. The island is a perfect destination for history hunters – amongst the museums and galleries Java also contains three cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Java – and in particular Jakarta – presents a golden opportunity to revel in its contemporary nightlife and its hot, exotic atmosphere. There are plenty of high-end bars, restaurants and nightclubs with a distinctly Javanese flavour that make the most of spectacular ocean views and jungle scenery. Relax and enjoy open air entertainment after a long day exploring and shopping in the luxurious boutique stores.
Komodo
Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands in Indonesia situated to the East of Bali and Lombok. The main island, its smaller neighbours and the surrounding waters make up the Komodo National Park which was designated a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE in 1991.
The area is increasing in popularity as a yacht charter destination thanks to its volcanic landscapes, rich underwater environments and impressive wildlife including the infamous Komodo Dragon. These giant lizards are well respected by locals who believe the centuries old legend that the pre-historic looking creatures are descendants of a dragon princess.
Indonesia is a year-round charter destination, but Komodo National Park is best visited from May to October during the dry season.

Although there is now a wider choice of motor or sailing yachts in Indonesia, some of the traditional Phinisi boats make for a highly authentic, yet 5-star adventure. Centuries ago, wooden Phinisi boats were used to carry exotic spices and textiles along the ancient trading routes. These yachts can provide a romantic backdrop for couples or an exciting playground for families looking for something a little different.
Many motor yachts now call Indonesia home and large superyachts often visit on a wider tour of the southern hemisphere, meaning there is something available for every budget.
