KaiserWerft and Voith Engineering will be introducing a really promising new propulsion system at the Dubai Boat Show as well as Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013, where Kaiserwerft will also officially present its new flagship, motor yacht KAISER 85. The latest Kaiser-85 superyacht is designed by well known Italian designer, Luca Dini.
An evolution of Voith’s extensively tested and proven inline thrusters and propulsion systems used on numerous ships; this new compact magnetic propulsion system, which does away with the gear box and conventional shafts; could very well be a game changer for large yachts.
Kaiserwerft has worked closely with the Voigt engineering group on the first yacht application of this innovative system, the 148-foot motor yacht Kaiser-45, to be built completely in carbon and Kevlar composites. The first Kaiser-45 yacht is already under construction at one of Kaiserwerft’s facilities in Antalya, Turkey and is due to be launched in 2014.
The project is more than promising. Tank tests performed at the University of Vienna in Austria have shown significantly reduced fuel consumption, about 40 % at 16.5 knots. Another advantage is that the Voith unit, which includes sturdy and light carbon rotor blades driven by an integrated permanent magnetic ring motor directly connected to the vessel’s generator, creates much fewer vibrations and noise. Generators can easily be insulated in a dedicated room for further sound- dampening and greater onboard comfort.
Another great benefit is that the whole unit is compact, allowing designers to dedicate more space to interior accommodations Voith’s inline thrusters and propulsions, extensively tested on ships of all kinds, have shown to provide excellent control for forward and side motion as well as dynamic positioning, allowing the captain to keep the vessel in the same position without the use of anchors. Environmentally sensitive yacht owners will also appreciate the fact that the units use water rather than oil as lubricant, minimizing the risk of damaging leaks.
Another advantage is that the system is innovative but proven. In fact, all individual components and technologies have been tested extensively and more important, successfully. The whole package and its application to the yachting sector is complete new.
Among the yard’s most interesting future projects is the flagship motor yacht Kaiser 85, designed by the famous Italian designer Luca Dini. She is an 85-metre yacht with elegant and distinguishing lines, driven by four diesel electric engines and Voith Schneider propulsions.
The KaiserWerft range consists in 48, 56, 63, 73 and 85 meters motor yachts all of them created by Luca Dini Design.
