Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2010 – With two straight wins out of two races held, the 39 metre sailing yacht Ganesha is the overall winner of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2010 in a good regatta for Dubois. Ganesha, built by Fitzroy yachts, also dominated the 23 boat Cruising Division while the Wally 101 Indio took overall victory in the Performance division.
The Dubois designed sailing yacht Moonbird and Harry Macklowe’s Unfurled took second and third place respectively among the Cruising yachts. The Performance class saw the Wally yachts Highland Fling and Magic Carpet 2 take second and third place Loro Piana trophies.
The event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with Boat International Media, saw a fleet of 28 of the largest and most spectacular sailing yachts in existence gather in Porto Cervo for five days of racing, varied weather conditions and a luxurious social programme.
Following two days of enforced relaxation ashore – thanks to too much and then not enough wind – the superyacht fleet were today glad to be out racing through the granite islands of the La Maddalena archipelago once again in 10 – 12 knots of north westerly breeze.
Today’s race took the fleet from the start off Porto Cervo west through the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isola delle Bisce island and onwards to the Golfo delle Saline before heading north, around the southernmost tip of Caprera island and on to round the Isola dei Monaci.
After leaving the Monaci island to starboard the fleet navigated southward to the finish line situated in front of Porto Cervo. The north westerly breeze began to die out as the leaders approached the finish line resulting in almost the entire fleet arriving in very close proximity – a rare treat for the many spectators and photographers following the race.
The Dubois-designed Ganesha was the fastest around the course in the Cruising division and also took victory on corrected time. Andrea Recordati’s Indio, with French match racing champion Philippe Presti calling tactics, took line honours and corrected time victory in the Performance division.
Pier Luigi Loro Piana, CEO of the family-owned company and a participant in the event with his My Song commented on the event: “Despite the changeable winds, too much or too little, the event confirmed once again that we have got the right formula to allow superyachts to race competitively together and to promote the wonderful sport of sailing. Thanks to the fantastic race course off Porto Cervo this event is unique in the Mediterranean.”
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s sporting calendar continues throughout the month of June with the Trofeo Boeris, Audi Invitational and Farr 40 European Circuit events while the Audi Sardinia Cup – Isaf Offshore Team World Championship rounds of the month in style.
