Luxury motor yacht GLASS is a striking and highly innovative concept, beautifully designed by talented Lujac Desautel, one of the finalists for the ‘Young Designer of the Year‘ award at the 2014 ShowBoats Design Awards, sponsored by the premier Dutch luxury yacht builder, Oceanco. This competition recognises the best superyacht design from the boards of student and trainee designers.

The world renown composer and his family have just finished a superb dinner in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, and are now on the limousine tender en-route to their yacht GLASS. The owner is eager to be on board and to relax. It’s been a trying week: concert schedules, various global flight bookings, and volatile rivalry between the first and second violins, has all weighed heavily on him, and all he wants now is a quiet cocktail with his wife while the grandchildren are tended to and tucked into bed for the evening.

Approaching, with luxury yacht GLASS now in sight, he casts a warm smile as everyone is looking at the glistening reflection of the water on the yacht’s facade. From a distance, the appearance is reminiscent of a floating Japanese lamp, or that of an enormous votive candle. The water lights are on and the entire yacht is bathed in a celestial glow, bringing a shimmering intensity to the warm summer evening.

Pulling up to superyacht GLASS, the acropolis-like stairs are lit, with a soft, ethereal glow while the cantilever of the floor above signifies a warm arrival and welcome to the family. Upon walking up the procession of stairs onto the main deck, the glass doors open into the “sea lounge” where the drinks are ready and waiting.

The group continues into the core of GLASS superyacht and will then be elevated to the next floor. The little ones, excited, notice the darkened sky above and begin to gaze at the heavens and their unfolding. This is the unique and magnificent view that GLASS indulges; where one can look through the sky atrium to far beyond the clouds above.

Upon entering the second level, everyone is immediately presented with an unparalleled 360 degree view of the ocean. On the left is the sunken living room with its plush white cushions. To the right, the dining room and cocktail lounge, where the piano sits quietly, waiting to provide future entertainment. In the center, there is an enclosed outdoor garden where the couple will be enjoying their evening cocktails over the calm sea.

Life on board is casual and conducive to that of a beachside cottage, yet so refined as to entertain friends and relatives from around the world in the most effortless and chic style. GLASS yacht reflects and confirms the lifestyle of the family while offering moments of natural intimacy and escape. Conceived as a confluence of beauty and function and the symbiosis of nature and architecture coming to together.
GLASS Yacht Concept - Interior
A homage to the skyscraper and a canvas to the sea; super yacht GLASS is organized vertically by three cubic volumes. Each floor is entirely dedicated to maximizing the amount of living space for guest and crew on board. At the heart of GLASS, similar to the function of a skyscraper core, a 7’x10′ elevator platform that moves freely between all floors, crew pantries, wine cellar, sick berth, laundry, kitchens, and day heads; a perfect consolidation of essential functions.

The unusual nature of a SWATH hull, is free of the conventional restrictions in a mono-hull like narrow and cluttered outdoor space. Like an ancient Mayan temple, the aft deck lowers itself to the water for access to tenders and water sports. This unusually large amount of space can be also reimagined as a private amphitheater. The stairs can also be utilized for the owner to host performances; the aquatic equivalent of the Stairway to Heaven.

Superyacht GLASS uses materiality to create the perfect composition for architecture and nature coming together in the most intimate way; completely in tune with the environment. The facade is conceived as an ever-changing canvas for reflection. No longer a foreign object to the water, but a physical mirror, it becomes a multi-faceted gem on the open ocean.

Light and ethereal or masculine and monumental, GLASS yacht is the binary of the two opposites. Like a composer mastering the perfect composition; GLASS is a response to its context and ever-changing environment, maintaining essence of place through its architectural design, surface textures and sensitivity of material. GLASS is quite possibly the marriage of a social and environmentally perfect anomaly of nautical architecture.
