The Greek Government has announced a landmark change in the luxury yacht charter sector with the introduction of the “e-Charter Permissions” system which underlines their commitment to bolstering the marine tourism industry.
Up and running since the end of 2023, this digital platform aims to modernise and expand the market and simplify the legal framework for non-Greek-flagged yachts to operate in Greek waters. The “e-Charter Permission” and the more advanced “Charter Permission Plus” will cover both yacht charter contracts entirely conducted within Greece and those commencing or concluding within Greek waters. It empowers these luxury charter yachts to engage in commercial operations in Greece, subject to specific terms and conditions – with the permit initially set to be valid for 28 days but subject to adjustments.
The Ministry of Shipping has heralded the introduction of system as an important step in maintaining Greece’s position as a premier destination for Mediterranean yacht charters. Not only that, but it has a potential to stimulate the local economy, generate employment and welcome non-EU yachts to the area. This digital innovation finds a balance between the development of the yachting industry and vital adherence to established fiscal policies including local VAT regulations.
