A total number of 24 participants from marinas across Malaysia as well as neighbouring regions are currently present at the first ever two day course, endorsed by the Global Marina Institute (GMI), taking place in the lovely Asian yacht charter destination – Malaysia. Entitled ‘Marinas 202’, the course is being delivered by GMI founding partner, the Marina Industries Association (MIA). It is part of an integrated career pathway for the marina industries.

The course has attracted industry personal from 14 marinas in Malaysia and a number from marinas in Singapore and Thailand. The course is being held at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club in Selangor 25 and 26 June. The course comprises a mix of class room and practical components including marina site inspections.
Well respected Certified Marina Manager (CMM) Andrew Fenwick is the lead lecturer at the Malaysian course. Fenwicks Marina near Sydney was recently given highly commended status; boatyard category, in the 2013/14 Marina of the Year Awards conducted by the MIA. Francis Olsen CMM from the MIA International Marina of the Year, Marina at Keppel Bay in Singapore is also presenting at the course.
President of the MIA Andrew Chapman said the Marinas 202 course is an important catalyst for the development of the marina industries in the region. “While there is growing impetus for the development of marinas, it is critical that this is done hand in hand with the development of industry skills. Successful marina investments need to be underpinned by suitably trained and qualified personal to maintain, manage and sustain the investment”.
Chairman of the Global Marina Institute (GMI) Mick Bettesworth said the expansion of GMI endorsed courses across Asia was another sign of the growth of the marina industry in the region. “GMI provides an important quality control mechanism to support the delivery of globally consistent industry standards and practices. This ultimately benefits the boat users at marinas and ensures a more sustainable marina industry”.
