Sponsored by Yacht & Sail (Rcs Mediagroup) as well as ADI (Association for Industrial Design), the prominent “Nautical Design Award” went to the Maxi Dolphin‘s Nacira 67 sailing yacht Shamlor in the category “Sailing yachts up to 24 metres”. Luxury yacht Shamlor is designed by Axel de Beaufort.
Following are the motivations behind the panel’s decision: “The jury selected this boat for the high level of workmanship that has always distinguished the Maxi Dolphin boatyard. In this case in particular, its 100% carbon construction was found to be extremely precise. The boat was inspired by very large ocean crafts with a stern with canting keel and central canard. This choice allowed the designer to revamp the interiors by moving the saloon to the stern, placing it in contact with the external environment”
Technical data of the Nacira 67 yacht Shamlor: LOA 19.50 m, beam 5.55 m, draught 3.35 m, displacement 16 t, sailing area 263 m2
The prize, now in its third edition, is awarded by a jury consisting of both ADI designers and a team of ship owners led by Walter de’ Silva from Volkswagen. Some of the ship owners who judged the yachts nominated for the 2012 NDA prize included Giorgio Armani, Vittorio Missoni, Lamberto Vallarino Gancia and the mayor of Venice Giorgio Orsoni.
The winners of the Nautical Design Awards will later be assessed by the Permanent Observatory for ADI Design to select nominees for the Index awards and the Compasso d’Oro, the most important recognition in the design world since 1956.
NACIRA 67 yacht Shamlor stands out for her superior performance, which necessitates extremely high quality construction standards, entrusted to Maxi Dolphin, which was chosen as the shipbuilder: further confirmation of the excellent levels reached by the Erbusco boatyard and recognised in the international sailing world.
Constructed entirely with Sprint pre preg technology, NACIRA 67 yacht Shamlor is notable for her extreme sturdiness and unparalleled lightness, guaranteeing excellent performances in regattas.
The stern of hull is very wide, recalling the “pure racer Vor 70” hulls created for offshore regattas, with a very flat bottom and accentuated lateral edges. Luxury yacht Shamlor is also equipped with a canting keel, a lifting dagger board with adjustable angle of attack, and rotating shaft. For reasons of weight and performance, two retractable hydro generators and a wind turbine blade are installed in the stern.
The stylish and sporty layout of the Maxi Dolphin yacht Shamlor sees, at the stern, two double guest cabins which share a spacious bathroom, a master’s cabin with private bathroom and finally a commander’s cabin at the centre of the hull. The latter are equipped with electronic ship instruments. The large living room and galley are at the stern.
The racer style also dominates the interiors: all of the structures and the hull are in carbon fibre. The Nomex and waterproof plywood furnishing is finished in bleached oak. One interesting automotive design feature are the aerodynamic boards on the sides of the deckhouse, used as a shield for the sun that filters the large lateral windows.
