With the London 2012 Olympic Games now just over a year away, and patient sports fans finally finding out which events they will be enjoying, MDL Marinas is reporting soaring levels of interest from boat owners across the globe that are keen to get close to the Olympic action.
Cobb’s Quay in Poole has already seen a marked increase in interest from boat owners from both the UK and further abroad. Those wanting to get close to all the sailing activity taking place in Weymouth and Portland are now looking at berthing their boats within cruising distance of the Olympic venue.
Cobb’s Quay is one of just a handful of marinas in the country able to accommodate larger motoryachts, allowing boat owners to stay in the comfort of their cabins whilst taking in the top-class sailing action on the water. In addition, MDL’s Ocean Village Marina and Shamrock Quay are experiencing a similar increase in enquiries from large superyacht owners keen to secure a berth suitable for their yacht throughout the Olympic event.
MDL’s Windsor and Bray marinas are also in the thick of the on-water action, located just a few miles from Dorney Lake, which is playing host to all the Olympic rowing and flat water canoeing events.
With 2.3 million tickets up for grabs, and 46,000 already sold for the sailing event alone, local accommodation will be at a premium. Local marinas can be an excellent option for visitors to the Olympics, when many others will be opting for expensive but substandard hotel accommodation. London-based boat owners can even use marinas like Penton Hook as a base to travel down the Thames and into the heart of the action.
Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We’re seeing a definite surge of interest relating to berths in marinas close to the 2012 Olympic sailing and rowing venues. As boating enthusiasts have applied for and received confirmation of their Olympic tickets, they’ve been quick to source local berths. With enquires coming thick and fast, we expect that we’ll be fully booked for the 2012 games which might give us an excuse to set up our own little sporting village!”
