The 12th edition of the New Zealand Millennium Cup is about the commence, with its first race of 2020 taking place in the Bay of Islands from the 29th of January to the 1st of February.
Originally raced as a supplement to the 30th edition of America’s Cup, the Millennium Cup has evolved to attract a worldwide audience and attracts international names to the regatta’s location and New Zealand’s large cruising grounds.
The Bay of Islands has been the preferred venue for the event in New Zealand waters, however, the Millennium Cup originated farther south in Auckland and has been raced as far afield as Palma among the Balearic Islands, alongside sister regatta the Superyacht Cup.
Renowned sailing yachts taking part in the event include SASSAFRAS, SILVERTIP and JANICE OF WYOMING with fresh new faces KAWIL and THALIA will be joining the line-up. For 2021, CILLIAM and BLACK SAILS have already entered along with the experienced three aforementioned sailing yachts. The J-Class Association will also be joining the event next year to create an extraordinary regatta of up to 40 yachts.
“Having been involved with most other superyacht regattas globally, I can honestly say that the 2018 Millennium Cup was the most enjoyable event I’ve ever done,” commented S/Y SASSAFRAS Captain Tim Michalick.
