Motor yacht Mazu, Cheoy Lee’s 5000th order since 1940’s, is currently nearing completion. Work on the steel hull and composite superstructure was done in parallel, in two different building bays at Cheoy Lee’s ‘Hin Lee’ manufacturing yard in southern China.
Cheoy Lee Shipyards constructed a full sized mock-up of the vessel in plywood. The mock up is an exact scale replica of the real motor yacht Mazu. The mock-up is accurate right down to the hull frames and construction members that make up the vessel. As well as being an excellent tool for the owner and interior designers to actually walk through and experience the yacht before the real (and valuable) components are permanently installed on the end product, it is of even great benefit to the shipyard.
In full swing, more than 100 technicians and carpenters may be working on a project of this size at any one time. The vessel soon becomes crowded with the different tradesmen running pipes, cables, cabinetry etc. Progress and worker efficiency becomes limited by the capacity of the yacht to contain them. The mock-up alleviates all such pressure. Components from hard piping runs to fine cabinetry can all be custom fitted without a single visit to the yacht under construction.
No doubt, building a 46m (151’’) plywood motor yacht replica is expensive. This cost however is more than offset by the increase in worker productivity. The result is less traffic through the actual yacht Mazu while it is under construction and greatly benefits space planning by being able to see and review arrangements (particularly the engine room) before they are installed. Cheoy Lee also uses this construction technique prior to building the first in any new series of a production yacht.
Motor yacht Mazu is the second yacht in the Marco Polo Series, which are 45m Transocean explorers created by MCC and designed by MCC based on the lines by Ron Holland for the Marco Polo Series to explore the world’s remote regions. Marco Polo is the finest example of European quality built in China, typifying her builder’s approach to modern fuel efficient green cruising.
Her thoroughly seaworthy hull has twin rudders and bulbous bow. Her look is practical and purposeful and low maintenance silken finish suits her word girding role. M/Y MAZU’s range is spectacular, 6600 nm at 10 knots and carefully optimized hull form allows cruising with 35% lower emissions than any other similar sized yachts in today´s market.
