Designed by Guido de Groot, the new Selene 78 Ocean Explorer yacht is currently under construction at Selene Yachts. Motor Yacht Selene 78 was ordered by a client from North America, featuring impressive range and stylish interior, she is also perfect for ling distance (ocean) cruising in comfort and luxury. Selene 78 trawler’s lines are based on the shipyard’s larger Selene 92 Ocean Explorer, also under build at the moment at Jet-Tern Marine in China. Following the Selene Trawler 66 and Selene 92 Ocean Explorer yacht, the building and sale of the Selene 78 mark the launch of a striking series of Ocean Explorer yachts.

The first Selene 78 Ocean Explorer yacht will have a length of nearly 24 metres and a beam of 6.5 metres. The design offers a larger volume than most yachts in its size range thanks to a round-bilged hull shape combined with a deep hull and cruiser stern. These unique characteristics result in a superior sea-going performance and relatively low fuel consumption.

Partly due to its sizeable volume, the yacht offers copious living and sleeping space on board. Each of the sleeping accommodations is spacious, as are the saloon, galley and wheelhouse. The comfort levels on the flybridge and sun deck are unprecedented for this size of yacht, enhanced by a luxury seating area on the foredeck and large dining space on the aft deck.

All owners of a Selene Ocean Explorer yacht enjoy a wealth of freedom regarding the layout and styling of their interior. The owners of both the Selene 92 Ocean Explorer and the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer visited the offices of Guido de Groot in Leiden to discuss the interior design in detail.

Based on their wishes, Guido de Groot developed a custom-made interior for each yacht.
“The design of the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer features a living and dining area with a half open galley layout, explains Guido de Groot. “The full beam master suite has its own private entrance from the main deck with direct access to a separate lower deck office. Two ensuite guest cabins are situated forward of the master. Aft is a lazarette and crew quarters, with space for two crew members.”

The yacht also has a very strong identity in terms of exterior styling says De Groot: “While most boats in this class are rather ‘static’ in terms of their exterior styling, the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer has dynamic lines and will be instantly recognisable as something new and unique. The biggest achievement of the new design is that the exterior lines are so elegant that you barely notice that she is a yacht with an enormous interior volume. There were no compromises made for any of the onboard areas in terms of size. Every area is spaciously laid out including guest cabins and the VIP cabin.

De Groot says that the challenge for his design team was to be modern while also having the new lines accepted by Selene yacht owners. “It is very nice to see that that the new designs have been so widely liked while also attracting clients who are new to the oceangoing yacht market. The interior design is of a high standard and tailored to personal requests from her owners based on their long experience with previous yachts. The Luxury yacht Selene 78 Ocean Explorer clients are planning to stay for longer periods on board and feel at home on board. This means the interior has to functional as well be as looking good.

The first Selene 78 features timeless wood panelling with burl and marquetry inlays combined with luxurious fabrics.” The technical systems onboard Ocean Explorer yachts are of the highest quality. Clients can choose between standard Cummins or John Deere engines, while the hydraulic systems that power the bow and stern thrusters as well as the stabilisers, anchor winch and bilge pump are provided by TRACABT. The generators from Onan or Northern Lights are responsible for the power supply.

The yachts also feature extensive navigation systems, with owners having a choice between systems from Furuno, Simrad, Raymarine or Yachtcontrol. The communication and entertainment systems are equally impressive and offer various options to choose from, such as a W-LAN network connected to the internet.
The onboard climate is regulated by the Cruise Air air-conditioning system, which can be extended with a Kabola central heating system if so desired. To further optimise comfort during sailing, the yacht has been equipped with superior sound insulation. The construction of the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer Yacht is fully underway, as is the build of the superyacht Selene 92 Ocean Explorer. Guido de Groot also designed the Selene 128 Ocean Explorer yacht, which is currently the subject of further development.
