Have you ever wondered what life might be like aboard a luxury cruise ship and with who you would share dinner on board? The beautiful and the rich are thrown together with unexpected consequences when they find themselves on board such a yacht, in Ruben Ostlund’s latest satirical movie TRIANGLE OF SADNESS.
With fabulous performances from the ensemble cast, it is luxury yacht CHRISTINA O who takes centre stage and boasts true Hollywood star quality. The restored warship was the pride of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and her guest list looks like a retrospective of Hollywood greats: Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Grace Kelly to name but a few. And in recent years she has been no stranger to the small screen either, hosting Dominic West as The Prince of Wales in the Netflix drama The Crown.
CHRISTINA O was named after Onassis’ eldest daughter and after his death in the mid-1970s Christina donated her to the Greek government, but due to lack of funds for maintenance she slowly deteriorated until she was rescued by an Onassis family friend in the late 1990s. John Paul Papanicolaou reportedly spent more than $50 million returning her back to her former glory.
With her distinctive sweeping silhouette and yellow funnel, it is no surprise that she was the glamourous backdrop for Hollywood’s glory days and is now the star of the show. Her classic looks are simply the beginning, as her stunning on deck facilities include the mosaic tiled Minotaur swimming pool/dancefloor, split level jacuzzi deck with selection of free-standing sun lounges and the amazing bar. Her two restored Hacker craft tenders will ensure guests can make a discrete yet stylish entrance.
Her history is further showcased in the incredible interior which has benefited from numerous refits and meticulous restorations over the years. Cosy up beside the lapis lazuli-fronted fireplace, in the main deck’s Lapis Lounge, said to be a favourite of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Listen out for the rich tones of Maria Callas’ voice accompanied by the Steinway piano in the Callas Lounge. Imagine yourself as a guest at Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly of Monaco’s wedding reception which was held on board. Settle down with a good book in the Winston Churchill Library. Or if you are lucky enough to stay on board, sleep in the Onassis Suite.
