With unprecedented quality, creativity, as well as presentation of freshly prepared food and drink regarded as one of the unique and single most important aspects of luxury yacht charter, the MYBA Charter Show Chefs’ Competition has correspondingly grown over the last two years to become an integral part of this annual ‘trade-only’ Show.
Regarded as an invaluable marketing tool by charter agents, a winning yacht can justifiably lay claim as having proven before an independent panel, the superior standard of cooking and presentation offered onboard and explains why the importance of a yacht’s Chef and crew becoming involved cannot be expressed highly enough.
Out of a total of 54 participating yachts in this year’s Show, 24 yachts (45% of the assembled fleet) took part in the Chef’s Competition, which this year was given an ‘International Brunch with Baked Goods Basket’ theme as the main challenge.
Divided into three categories based upon yacht length, entrants were asked to express originality, presentation, taste, creativity and use of seasonal ingredients appropriate to the theme.
From the moment the judges stepped on to the passerelles, a second ‘Yacht Service Award’ recognised the welcome onboard and the overall impression the crew gave by working together, to support their chefs as one cohesive and enthusiastic team.
Chefs’ Competition organiser, Sarah Sebastian, said: “The hardest task was to pick finalists out of you all. From D’Angleterre Il de Copenhague’s superb ‘Elements’ theme to Axioma’s ‘Einstein’s Laboratory’ theme, a big thank you to all the chefs and crews who entered and gave up their valuable time to compete. And bravo to Australis, with their gluten free brunch sampled while wearing our spring flower tiaras!”
Rewarded from a range of prizes donated by Chefs’ Competition official sponsors, winners also each received framed certificates from main media sponsor, Superyacht World.
To maintain popularity and ensure the continued improvement of the MYBA Charter Show Chefs’ Competition in the coming years ahead, as yet still unconfirmed plans by MYBA may be to incorporate more professional Chefs’ amongst the judging panel and perhaps to survey the Chefs before the competition agenda is finally agreed, to find out what culinary challenges they think will test their skills to the full.
